Yup. Free trade with America is on its final legs.

The time to prepare was decades ago, the next best time is immediately. Unfortunately by time we talk to everyone we have to talk to, get provinces on board, etc. that 10 years will have passed and we won’t have put a single stake in the ground.

We really need to get out of the mindset that things will go back to normal after the midterms, or after the 2028 election. Thats what's holding people back. It is why you have Doug Ford Prostrating himself on American news networks every month, begging for things to go back to normal.

Normal is gone, dead. The sooner that is accepted, the sooner we realize that as a country we need to move fast.

We lose over 200 billion a year just because of inter-provincial tariffs and that should be the easiest thing to deal with because it is all 100% within Canadian control.

Free trade deals take time to work out. The provinces are like mini nation states, they will need time to work this out. The good news is that in a year and a half since Carney came on the scene, great strides have been made. In the fullness of time, more strides will be made. But I look at it this way. The EU has been around for 33 years, and it still doesn't have frictionless free trade. These things take time.

Yup. And the main source the USA pivoted to was middle east Aluminium, which has been heavily disrupted by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

Add to that the USA doesn't have the cheap electricity to produce large amounts of Aluminium at scale, and it explains why the price per ton in the USA is a insane 2000 more than in Canada or the EU, roughly double.

Considering everything Aluminium is used for....I cannot help but laugh at how monumentally stupid this administration is. It fights trade wars about as well as it fights actual wars...not well!

PRINCE ALBERT - Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe says the province will impose a reciprocal tax on American alcohol.
He says starting Sept. 8, Saskatchewan will impose the 50 per cent fee.
The U.S. recently implemented a 50 per cent tariff on Canadian alcohol products and a range of other goods.
Moe says the province’s tax on American products will support Saskatchewan producers.

The fact that Scott Moe is finally getting involved leads me to believe whatever terms the Yanks gave us were so egregious he couldnt play the "be diplomatic" card anymore

Foot-dragging on inter-provincial protectionism is the indicator that there is not really a "crisis". Provinces are still putting some of their preferred policies at the front of the line and hoping either the federal government or other provinces will take measures to decrease costs.
