CAN-USA Tariff Strife (split from various pol threads)

There's nothing "good" about any of this.
If you made the decision back in Oct/Nov to move into cash because the market was/is over bought and you intend to reinvest back into the market when it turns on itself, then it’s a good thing.

SCOTUS has released today’s decisions, no decision on tariffs yet.
Maybe they're hoping to kick the can down the road until after the midterms so they can see what the new political landscape looks like (i.e. do they have to continue to cow to Trump or will Congress have their back in challenging his power?)

Why wait for the midterms when they can wait until the next election?

Assuming those are still a thing of course.

Or will they need to curb Congress's power to further enable presidential overreach?

That has to hurt some folks in Alberta who thought they had a fellow traveller in Saskatchewan.
Moe knows that Saskatchewan’s exportable resources (eg. canola, potash, uranium and more) are far less constrained by heavy price discounts of a neighbor reshaping transactional space and enforcing how much its wants to pay for a near monopolistic import position, than Alberta ever will be.

Here's some news on the cross-border travel.

Canadian land travel to the U.S. fell more than 30% in 2025

Statistics Canada says 7.6 million fewer Canadian automobiles travelled to the U.S. in 2025

What's interesting about this is when looking at individual land border crossings, specifically in this case - Windsor-Detroit. In the article it talks about cross-border travel over the Ambassador Bridge and the Windsor-Detroit tunnel was down only 11% vs the 30% overall decline. Breaking if down even more and looking specifically at travel cross-border using the Windsor-Detroit tunnel, year over year crossing were down only 4.5%.

Why you might ask, well how about the fact that over 11,000 people who live in Windsor/Essex County work in Metro Detroit. How about the fact that the 4th largest employer in Windsor/Essex County is the Henry Ford Hospital network located in metro Detroit. They employ 1,500 people who reside in Windsor/Essex County.

The top 3 employers are: 1) Stellantis (Chrysler's) with approximately 4,000 employees, 2) Caesar's Casino with approximately 2,200 employees and then Ford Motor Company with roughly 1,900. The 4th largest is based in the US with 1,500 CDN's crossing the border daily to work in the Henry Ford Hospital. Of those 1,500 people over 800 are Nurses......and that's just 1 hospital network in Metro Detroit, there are many others and there are many other nurses from Windsor/Essex County working for them.

So…does this mean he will also hit our oil, hydro and potash exports to the US with 100% tariffs??? Lolol

And here we go…
Trump has just threatened Canada with 100% tariffs if we go ahead with our various new trade agreements.

Pretty much reinforcing what Carney said in his speech.

The "Governor" title is also back.

Trump doesn’t want America to lose its status as the largest importer of Chinese products.

Whatever, to hell with him. He’s looking for a reaction. He’ll keep saying dumber and more inflammatory stuff as the rest of the world gets accustomed to the last round of nonsense.

Carney doesn’t seem like the type to be baited. Pretty sure it will be him continuing to pursue more diversification while this tantrum eventually calms itself down.

Yeah… Two types of people tantrum: disregulated toddlers, and borderline personalities/narcissists. Toddlers generally grow out of it… Narcissists continue to escalate to keep the attention on themselves. Gonna be a long three years.
