If the U.S. doesn’t produce enough cement domestically and needs to import it, taxing Americans who buy it seems somewhat self-defeating, no?

An export tariff on oil/gas/potash/electricity/nickel would for certain rattle their cage - but at what cost to us?

Oil has physical limits(pipelines) on how much we could export elsewhere, but it would drive up American fuel costs. It would be a costly game of chicken.

Potash can go elsewhere, I think that's fine, especially with fertilizer globally being hard hit by the iran war.

Electricity, hard hit for the yanks, but at the same time, unless they have alternatives, they are stuck with the price.

Nickle would be fine.

More importantly, Canadians would hold out due to spite. Would Americans?

I don’t think we’ll come to that on our side. Trump is having to deal with being the guy who dropped the soap in the communal shower right now on Iran. He’s flaying about to try and point out a distraction so he can escape the shower and make it back to his cell. We are the distraction.

Carney, for all his pragmatism, got elected on Elbows up. He got elected on PP would be weak on the US file.

He burned a lot of his political capital on being conciliatory to the USA to get a deal. It was for not. He's being made to look like a fool or pushover on the bridge deal, Carney saying one thing while lutnick gloats about another.

Here is the thing about elbows up. Once Carney loses that allure, once he's no longer seen as Captain Canada, he wont get that back. So to simply sit by meekly while the Americans do this is to risk just tanking his poll numbers. He might need to do something, otherwise it's no longer elbows up, its turtling.

They need softwood lumber for homes, but they've been tariff-ing that for a lot of years.

they used to tariff Mexican cement at 100%, no idea now, been lots of consolidation in the cement industry
