CAN-USA Tariff Strife (split from various pol threads)

seems like a dead end then. But maybe we should be more proactive at demanding an end to their subsidies?
Their dairy farmers would cry bloody murder.

Same way our dairy farmers would cry bloody murder if we ended supply management.

The americans are not arguing in good faith.

... I asked old Norm what was going on and he said the most common thing (Liberal, Conservative, NDP premiers) want to be seen "doing something" whenever some food mishap happens and they make nonsensical rules and regulations to appear like they are taking action.
Sounds familiar for all colours and levels of government - in the words of the Deputy Minister (that's what he'd be called in Canada) from "Yes, Minister" ....

Meanwhile, here's a take on the latest from Vance's schoolmate, via x.com.

lol, not sure if he’s deliberately trying to screw with Doug Ford, calling him a Liberal…

Watch out for this snake. JD's good buddy from school who thinks he can negotiate on our behalf. He'll make a power play for Poilievre's job before long.

He will end Pierres career as leader of the opposition, but no way he wins the leadership. Harper and Poillievre will actively tank this man.

Taking cues from the coach, who said the BC Tory leadership race result was a "big win against liberal lobbyists from out east," referring to Kory Teneycke who helped the didn't-win candidate.

The narrative continues as love remains lost between Team Blue National and Ontario franchises ....

So who to believe. Certainly not Team Carney. As inferentially pointed out by CNN, Canada isn’t relevant anymore to the US economy. Yes there’s a trade war, but they’ll replace Canada within months.
Fine. They can get their potash and aluminum from someplace else then.

I was never confident that any we we agreed to would stick anyway. He upended CUSMA, he would have upended whatever this was going to be.

If their 'Security and Energy' demands are accurate, how can anyone on our side say that was something we should agree to?

Oh my god what the hell. 100% some kind of messed up customs union.

[CBC]Details on restricting Canada's ability to strike new trade deals
For clarity, USMCA (CUSMA to us) has that section already. It’s nothing new. What was new was Carney suddenly announcing that he had signed a trade deal with a non-Party to allow Chinese vehicles into the market. Yes, he did that to overcome Chinese tariffs on canola, potash and other goods. But it’s an example of Canada being forced to breach an agreement that was already breached by the USA, to facilitate agricultural and resource trade that was essentially embargoed by China.

Again, all sides in this are outright liars and manipulators. Almost everything Trump does is a violation of USMCA. Almost everything we do to protect our economy from Trump is a violation of USMCA.

The most damaging thing Carney could have done is get into bed with China. And he did that with no hesitation because China manipulated a bad situation between Canada and the USA.

It’s all insane.

We didn't sign a trade deal with China.

He signed an agreement to admit vehicles into a restricted market. China didn’t open up its potash and canola market for no reason.
Which, as per the text of what you posted, is not a free trade deal.

We lowered tariffs and agreed to a quota, they lowered tariffs.

No free trade deal was written, or ratified by either nation.
