CAN-USA Tariff Strife (split from various pol threads)

On cheese, we ship $126 Million (CDN) to the US. The US ships $154 Million (USD) to us (booo!)

We ship 10,000 to 11,000 tonnes of cheese globally

Some of that I have no issues with like the language stuff, supply management, online news act...

They lost me on wanting to control who and what business we can conduct outside of Can - US trading.
Just one question. Did/Do we have anything in our NORAD and/or NATO agreements that limits or restricts our trade with certain nations?

Same way PP knifed O'Toole.
How did Poilievre do that?

O'Toole campaigned on ending the Carbon Tax then did an about turn and introduced a Conservative pricing system. Canceling that garbage was the first thing Carney did.

O'Toole then did a 180 on his firearms stance saying the 2020 bans would stay in place, AND, updated the CPC platform to say previously banned firearms would remaind banned.

Conservatives turning on O'Toole can hardly be called a surprise after that.

100%. O'Toole's demise was self inflicted.

Generally we don't negotiate treaties in the open. No government does.
Years ago you could say we don't conduct diplomacy through social media. Times change.

Canadian livelihoods are at stake. Both sidea are making claims, accusing the other of perfidy.

With the amount of propaganda, foreign influence, and obfuscation going on these days it's time we become more transparent. If the US government is trying to control who Canada is allowed to trade with then both our citizens and theirs should be made aware.

Do you actually believe that anything released by the government would be taken at face value by the opposition / US? Or do you think it'll jusr result in further political games and a break down in what little trust there is between the Canadian and US negotiating teams?

Its also a blackeye when on the Gordon Howe bridge deal, the US media released details much sooner and quicker than the Canadian media.

I have issues with the US wanting to control internal Canadian cultural policies as a rule. What would be the next step?

51st State seems less and less like a crazy ramble and more and more like a goal.

Seems like a fair ask.

Conservatives call on government to release U.S. trade offer details

And here's the letter sent by a Team Blue MP/Shadow Minister/critic for CAN-US relations:

It’s a pretty fair letter. They’ve been very careful about tone, that’s clear.

It would be nice to know in particular what demands the U.S. added or changed after they started signaling there was an agreement in the offing, and when those changes emerged. I’ll take this opportunity to note that we saw a much stronger suggestion that a deal was imminent from Trump than we ever did from PM Carney. He was more reserved and cautious in his optimism early last week. It may not be that many of the demands were actually all that new, but that perhaps we hoped to see the U.S. step back from some of them if we hit agreement on the largest substantial issues.

How can there be any trust when one side here is clearly lying? Citizens getting the full picture is what's most important IMO.

I hope to god the trade deal was not scuttled just to get the LPC more votes in the by elections at the end of the month. That would be sour and dirty politics.

In the absence of evidence, disinformation actors will be jumping to spread that theory as fact. Some might caveat it with “probably.”

Crafting conspiracy theories in our minds then publishing those theories into the wild will not be helpful to the Canadian position.
