CAN-USA Tariff Strife (split from various pol threads)

Saying its Russian disinformation or any disinformation is purely naive or deliberately not facing what could be an awful truth.

The idea the LPC will use this failed trade deal as awful as it is, is political tactics pure and simple. Both left and right political pundits have stated on numerous occasions that when Trump pisses off Canadians, it is the Liberals that benefit in the polls. Any of the parties in power would exploit this situation or do similar acts.

If the LPC answers the inquiries from the opposition parties and lays it out, it shows transparency and that could buy the Liberals good will.

The US Transportation Secretary chiming in with his own unconstructive comments. He seems to think a trade war is a war war.

Speaking on Fox News Sunday, Duffy said it was “foolish” for Canada to start a trade war with the United States, in part, because America’s northern neighbor “doesn’t have a military.”

Just so we are clear. Its all fine in the moment to rant and chant about your elbows up and how much we don't like Trump, which is zero change from spring 2025.

What does the Liberal government do going forward? What real steps are they going to take? I outlined many steps of what I think is steps towards our economic sovereignty long term not so dependent on the nation south of us.

And to be clear, I don't give one rats ass if this hurts or helps Trump in the mid terms elections. Keep in mind there is now a growing number of democrats who are just as determined to put the gears to us to get more jobs and GDP growth in their states. Don't be relying on mid term elections for help up here, that is stupidly foolish.

If our PM MC, I would recall parliament IMMEDIATELY and form an all party task force on moving forward.

These 50% tariffs are going to become painful real fast for some and for many others, by the time you realize the damage, it will be too late.

Not Russian disinformation. It is yours.
We don’t need to face awful hypotheticals and conspiracy theories any more than we need to worry about bigfoot.

We know you don’t like Carney, but you are not contributing to legitimate discussion when you are posting your worst fantasized motives for government behaviour.

OK, I present it as a possibility and you are putting in your fingers in your ears saying "not listening". GOT IT.

You better start looking at all possibilities. Its the failure to do so is what will sink Canada.

I root for Pierre and the CPC, never hid it. However I have stated that I want Carney to stay right where he is for at least another year or more. In this instance, I want Carney to succeed. We as a nation need Canada to succeed.

Screaming disinformation is the laziest and weakest cop out I can think of. Face ALL possibilities.

It’s a pretty fair letter. They’ve been very careful about tone, that’s clear.

It would be nice to know in particular what demands the U.S. added or changed after they started signaling there was an agreement in the offing, and when those changes emerged. I’ll take this opportunity to note that we saw a much stronger suggestion that a deal was imminent from Trump than we ever did from PM Carney. He was more reserved and cautious in his optimism early last week. It may not be that many of the demands were actually all that new, but that perhaps we hoped to see the U.S. step back from some of them if we hit agreement on the largest substantial issues.
Alternatively Trump has been playing the markets again trying to make things seem a certain way to benefit from it.

I have been saying for about a year, we need to contact South Korea and get 3 divisions minimum worth of kit ASAP. Not saying there will be a war, but I am saying it is stupid not to be prepared for one.

We are unable to defend our sovereignty, and we have a increasingly hostile exceptionally well armed neighbour. If we wish to remain independent we need to take steps to guarantee that.

Its call negations. You have to give some to get some.

We got absolutely zilch for the handful of concessions we gave freely.

Giving up parts of the fabric that makes up Canada for what amounts to a pinky promise is a complete red line regardless of who makes up the current government. There is a clear unwillingness from the Canadian public to give up more, what do you think the reaction would have been to something like that being agreed to? Better yet, the reaction to when the US inevitably breaks that pinky promise.

The USA was offering nothing?

I think the fabric that makes up the quilt we call Canada might be different for different folks.

If I were GoC king for a day, I’d hold off on announcing the type and scale of export taxes on resources ( 😉 ) until after 9/11 remembrance ceremonies, and the American 24-48 memory span still potentially remembers how Canada looked after all the Americans away from home when they not permitted to come back into their own country.
