Canada moves to 2% GDP end of FY25/26 - PMMC

The RCN has nothing to do with, nor is it effected by, the continual CA reshuffling for leading change points.

A nuclear deterrent is a more effective deterrent (but not a guarantee).

That being said conventional forces can be a effective deterrent as well. Look at Switzerland hasn’t been invaded in centuries despite being surrounded by countries that at various points in time wanted to.

Sometimes it isn’t about being able to fully defeat a invasion, it is about making the cost to invade much greater than the benefit. Look at Iran, they are losing the conventional fight, but they are making the costs much greater than the benefits.
On the deterrent front, seems a shame that we don't (apparently) have war (reserve?) stock that can be, should the neighbours come over the border, gleefully handed out to anyone willing to take a potshot at an invader, along with whatever minimum of uniforms (are armbands good enough?) are required to designate these people as lawful combatants.

Obviously a better trained and organized force would be better, however...

How and why would they do that?
Because the RCN refused to listen to the RN who tried this exact experiment a decade earlier than them and it turned out horribly (they reversed it). Canada being Canada ignored them and did it to similar results, except they are too stubborn to admit it failed (so far).

Main reason I suspect was the Marine Engineers (Stokers) were red and E-Tech and Hull Tech weren’t. So they thought putting them all together would create yellow or maybe even green when it had the complete opposite effect and now it is all red.

But who could have predicted making a trade consisting of all the following trades; machinist, millwright, welder, carpenter, electrician, and plumber, would turn out horribly.

Never mind war stock, we don't have equipment for personnel we have now. We're a decade + of not having enough rucksacks, multitools, small packs, load bearing gear, uniforms or sleeping kit to outfit existing troops to various degrees as time has gone by. Currently I know of basic courses running where they only possess uniforms, no load bearing gear of any kind, though someone was doing shenanigans and backdoor deals to get them something and that may have been happened by now. I'd say it's new phenomenon but I was one of several people who did their BMQ and SQ without tac vest or webbing over 20 years ago and it's only gotten worse (bayonets even in scabbards will destroy your cargo pockets, C7 mags do kinda/sorta fit into the old mag breast pockets if not well, and running around with a canteen in your cargo pocket sucks).

We did once get dozens of troops rucksacks via buying them from a surplus store though. Great to have to workaround the system to privately purchase the very equipment we can't issue out in order to make sure troops have something.

With all the money coming in I'd have hoped there would be some kind of interim equipment purchase or bootforgen style claim system to ensure troops have at least basic equipment until new stock is purchased in the new uniform pattern, but while there are lots of good things happening I remain firmly convinced we'll continue to fail to provide basic personal equipment or the equipment needed to run basic and trade courses for the reserves.

There are times we, as an institution, seem to be little more than a child touching a hot stove after being told not to, and watching our sibling do the same thing right before us. It's truly amazing how we fail at learning lessons.
