I figured a catch-all thread for specific border stuff is in order since it keeps peppering other discussions.

Some major money and effort being thrown at the border to be seen to do things. Canada is leasing and will deploy Black Hawks as soon as this week. Unfortunately for RCAF, the birds will be for the RCMP.

Drones are also in play and being deployed.

The Quebec government is prepared to deploy 300 police to the border to help fend off a wave of expected asylum seekers following Trump’s inauguration.

None of which will matter as far as Trump is concerned but good to see us increase capability that was likely needed

I think it will take a hard approach when implemented.

Anyone coming to our border seeking asylum, should be turned right back, especially if coming to unapproved spots like Roxham Rd. They are coming from a safe country and need to apply for asylum from outside Canada. Under no circumstance should they be allowed to set foot inside Canada to use our social programs or disappear into the interior. We should not be responsible for them one iota.

I don't know how, but it should be coordinated with US Border Services so they can take them into custody while the US determines their immigration status there.

We need to sort out the safe third country agreement.

I don't know if there's legal issues with this approach, but that is my solution.

Why won't it matter to Trump? He's the one that asked for it to be done. He wants to see less illegal immigration, drugs and terrorists coming from Canada. He made it part of the tariff discussions.

Now, will it be enough? That is the question. I'm sure Trump will let us know. But to insinuate it doesn't matter to him is ridiculous.

It’s been communicated by his team and others that Tarrifs are coming one way or another. Even if we reached 2% nato spending. He’s doing tarrifs. We could build wall. Yes doing tarrifs. So we need to hit back.

There is another end game and I think this isn’t about the border or our defence spending.

Really? Like what? What is the hidden agenda?
I don’t think it’s hidden either.

Panama, Greenland and Canada. I’ve hinted at this before. All those areas have a common denominator and I think Trump wants those three road blocks out of the way to get to it. And wants the US to have total control over it.

Canada’s #1 COA for everything is hope.

Hope the US protects us… hope the US economy is nice to us… hope. If Canada does something meaningful to secure itself (Brad alluded to interprovincial trade barriers) then you might have a more united and strong country. But right now all we have is “sure hope the world aren’t assholes to us.”

No one that matters is using hope as a COA.

The US is now a threat. It wasn’t before it is now.

We should act accordingly . Increasing border strength is a good move. Keeping guns and the increasing asylum seekers from the US out is a positive.

You should want more guns, for if we go north you are going to need a lot more than you got ;)

That is a major kick in the nuts for the CAF, sorry the RCMP are worthy of a Military helicopter, but you get a spray painted commercial one.

You realize his wish to buy Greenland, as with Canada and Panama, has already borne fruit. Denmark has entered into discussions about the US using tactical areas of Greenland. That was accomplished with the simple sales tactic of coming in really high and leaving room to negotiate down. The US already has use of Canada’s north for security purposes, nothing wrong with expanding that. Considering Canada is completely incapable of providing that sovereign security ourselves, and likely never will. There is no political will. Not to mention the coziness our government seems to have with Red China up there (and everywhere else). That should be considered a global concern. Before we bring the cannon in Kingston back into serviceable condition, it behooves the smart person to not panic and at least listen to what the other side has to say. I, myself, would like to see a much stronger economic union with an end goal of true free trade. We'll never know if we don't listen and instead put on the blinders while singing Oh Canada.

Like Mr Wonderful says. You need to separate the noise from the signal.

Like Denmark/Greenland did.
