Canada's tanks

"Ukrainian drones defeated a US armoured brigade in a battlefield exercise, insiders have revealed."

"A participant in the exercise, which ran across April and May, told the Journal that the attacking units’ vehicles sent up clouds of dust, making them easy targets for Ukrainian reconnaissance drones. The Ukrainians “destroyed” a US armoured brigade in the exercise, the participant said."

"The simulation was repeated over the course of two weeks, with US forces showing improvement over time."

"A US Army official told the Journal that new mobile brigade combat teams, which boast more advanced anti-drone tech and strategies, fared better in the exercises than teams with standard counter-drone equipment."

Are APS systems needed for C-UAS? Yes of course.

Do these exercises also give the drone team too much credit? Also yes. I've seen it on several Exs now. There is an OCT embedded with these crews that "destroy" ground vehicles then reset and 10 min later they're "destroying" more vehicles with the same drone.

"The simulation was repeated over the course of two weeks, with US forces showing improvement over time." sounds like the OCTs started making things a little more fair in addition to troops learning to deal with drones.

Huh! So that's what Thailand would look like with real money. Granted somebody's else's money, but.
Actually is you really want to see wild logistic problems Check out the Thai military stocks .
Picture GOFOs as small children dropped off at a penny candy store with a hundred dollar bill clutched in their hot little hands.

There are many people who will argue with you about whether the CV90105 and CV90120 are tanks assault guns or death traps.

Light tanks have a role - just not as MBTs. I like the idea of either a tp per MCav Sqn or a Sqn - worth at the Regt level in an MCav Regt. Hard to beat a 120mm in DFS task. Way cheaper and way faster than any ATGM.

CV90-120 variant with the autoloader is very interesting. It’s an assault gun or light tank not main battle tank; however if we want more mobile firepower this is a good fit. If we are only going to have one brigade with tanks, then this has a real role in the defence were assault guns were used historical. Along with recce in force. It is not a MBT replacement it sits in the murky middle of the spectrum of armour. Although it’s biggest fault which I’m sure many would agree: if it looks like tank, has a tank gun, and a has cav doctrine then it will be used as a tank.

To that final point. Imagine the final decision for or against this choice being decided by a Gerry Butts like character. Someone who would NEVER read a detailed brief let alone sit still for an in person presentation. I imagine the Liberal faceless ones in Ottawa are all in on Drones as they are "toys" and not Tanks BOOOM!!!!

Not a lot of difference armour wise from the leopard 1 we used as MBT's for a long time.
Yeah. But that's an argument that I'll leave to the black hat folks to take up.

Personally I don't like the generic 'cavalry" term. I divide things as between armour and cavalry and see the difference in roles vis a vis close combat and deep strike. I can see a role for lighter tanks for deep strike as its a different type of battle (I can even see the logic in the UK's AJAX) but then I wonder as to why bother - why not one close combat capable vehicle for both roles. (I do see a major difference in the constituent parts of an armoured regiment and a cavalry regiment just not so much on its primary "tank")

Cost is probably an issue, but should it be the decisive one?

🍻

But the effects of AT weapons have exploded since the Leo 1 was an MBT. The design of the Leo 1 was more as a sniper tank than as the "punch in the face" doctrine of Anglosphere tanking.

As long as our fleets are still small, I vote for one kind of DFS - an MBT.

Assault guns were expedients for nations that couldn't get to top-of-class indirect fire support and/or produce enough tanks to fight other tanks.

Another example of Tanksplaining

My guess is the next cleansheet design is going to sacrifice some upfront armour for better allround armour.
