A Gulfstream G-100 Air Ambulance out of Hamilton, ferrying a patient from Bermuda to Boston, is missing off the US coast. Two pilots, two medical staff, the patient and a family member are all missing.

It’s a private company that works on a contract basis, I would suspect a lot of the time at the behest of travel medical insurance providers.

Right.

Ornge is the sole statutory provider of air ambulance services for the province of Ontario.

The fellow I am helping with the 67 Cougar was a pilot for the province of Manitoba and flew Air Ambulance.

He was also a bush pilot with Manitoba Air Service. He has some tales to tell....

I'm sure there are more than a few private carriers though...in areas outside of Ontario, there are often carriers contracted to the provinces - I want to say I can think of 5 or 6 off the top of my head that supply air ambulance services to where I work...and if I had my say, they'd all be amalgamated into a single carrier.

Very sad news. Same company (and possibly same aircraft...same type at least) that brought by brother back to Canada from Florida after a serious cardiac incident. Thoughts and prayers to the crew and passengers. And shame on those who's first thoughts were about who's paying for a life saving mission.

Awful. My deepest condolences.

Right.

ORNGE contracts some of its non-emergency patient transport service in Northern Ontario to private air carriers.

I thought they just liked the colour. Makes sense.

By the time ORNGE came along , The Province of Ontario had switched their Land and Air ambulances from blue and white to orange and white.

When I joined, the exception was Metro , which were cream coloured.

Private for hire Land and Air non-emergency carriers can choose any colour they like because they are not operated by the provincial or municipal governments.

And shame on those who's first thoughts were about who's paying for a life saving mission.

Right.

It had to be explained to some people who were griping about the cost.

ORNGE simply put it this way,

If you have a valid OHIP card and need Ornge air ambulance services, your transport is covered.

Ontario provides emergency medical transport, land or air, within the province. The only place I can think of where Ornge might transport to a destination outside of the province would be to Winnipeg from n/w Ontario simply because it might be the closest trauma centre.

Covered medical treatment outside of Ontario has to be pre-approved so not really emergent. Medical repatriation is on the patient and, hopefully, their insurance carrier. Ontario will reimburse out-of-country medical care but the rates are really low, certainly nowhere near most US charges, particularly Florida.

I think Ornge is dumb name but here we are. It had a rocky start under its first director but seems to have straightened out.

See their heros on a regular basis
