Canadian River Class Destroyer Megathread

Four SPEIR were purchased. So three for the ships and one for training. Its the one you labeled on the first image (Mk 20 ?? label). Those squares are likely spotlights (not which is why there is one on each wing and one astern).

Not entirely sure what other things you labeled are on the other images.

Its difficult to ascertain what 'smaller' devices are intended to represent on such a model, if one does not have a prior classified (at present) knowledge.

Reference spotlights - yes - that is possible. However in my (granted outdated) experience is the seachlights are combined with signal lights, and they are typically located on the bridge wings, and not on top of the bridge, as depicted in that model. The model has them on top of the bridge. Now thats not to say (1) seachlights will not be put ontop of the bridge in the River class, nor (2) the model representation inaccurate. .... I think we simply don't know, so in a speculative sketch, I speculated as such could be SPEIR. Frankly, your spotlight view is just as likely as mine.

Now reference SPEIR and the Mk20 EOSS (nominally assigned with a BAE 5-inch gun), I note from marketing literature, SPEIR typically consists of multiple NFOV (where I speculate the Mk20 being one - but I have read NOTHING to confirm that) and SPEIR also consistes of multiple WFOV. So i would wager a subtantial amount that the Mk20, if it is part of SPEIR (which is by no means certain) is not the only NFOV in the River Class SPEIR configuration.

But this is all good speculation in my view - its interesting to hash out the various views. In a subsequent post I post some sketches/pix frrom L3harris marketing material on WFOV and NFOV for SPEIR - as that is of interest - although a caveat there - the marketing info is deliberately a bit vague there - I believe.

I wish the model (in the great images posted) had higher fidelity - but we have what we have.

I find the model resolutions of the River Class, while MOST INTERESTING, don't have 100% the fidelity that one may wish to be positive as to where the NFOV and WFOV for the SPEIR implementation on the River Class may be located.

And after all - there are many other aspects on this interesting destroyer procurement program of interest.

You should see what some folks set up their bunks with...

I sailed with a guy who made fridge out of his locker. Stoker. He would come into the mess at 15 days at sea with a big mac... Guess what he stored in the fridge ?

I wont mention the guy's name but he's a bit of a legend, like the Ham Burglar, in the NCM Naval community... Retired now.
I was living in the same mess when he made the fridge. Ran power from his bunk light to power it and caused an earth that the ET’s spent weeks trying to find. He was quite the character!

Creative as they might be, for both of those modifications today I would have recommended administrative action at a minimum, or stomped them down quickly.

Adding a fridge in a mess deck is a violation of about 4 policies two safety ones for electrical, one health and safety from the PMed side of the house, and it adds load to the DG's which shouldn't be there where it might effect stability of the switchboard. You can't even use a power bar in the mess decks without permission.

The media server is another one that's an issue due to EMCON and CYBERSECURITY.

Not to mention the massive costs incurred during refit to pull that out as its an unapproved engineering change. We bitch about the cost of refits going up but we do it to ourselves with those sorts of shenanigans (I know the sailor now retired who did that, amazing guy and love him to death).

Just wait until the new ships come on line and NO MESS modifications will be allowed due to fire loading. C&PO's mess with all that nice wood paneling and cabinetry they all have on the frigates is a tinder box just ready to f--k us as soon as we take combat damage.

People need to listen to your engineers.

Why does CRCN (and his subordinate formation commanders) permit this? Why do they not enforce safety and security?

Or is it all magical fireproof wood, and non shattering glass, that would never ever cause a problem in a shooting war?

What about when it's the engineer's who want the wainscoting and wood paneling all over the mess ?
I find it hard to believe the MSEO is going around the ship demanding that stuff for the messes. More likely they are fighting a losing battle with the XO and Coxn. Which is usually the case in my experience.

Because they don't know, nor do they seem to care judging moral a higher priority. You think the ships would be in the shape they are in if the NWO community actually listened to their maintainers?

There IS magical fireproof wood (sort of), you can treat the wood to not be so combustible and there are inspections where they write reports on this stuff. There are fire loading inspections during pre-refit. Furniture is also a problem, mostly for the C&PO's and Wardroom. Wardroom doesn't even have a fixed seating option like Jr's and C&POs' does (which are designed to not catch on fire or break and move around in heavy seas... lol). You can still have some of that stuff, just not a lot of it, and the space has to be designed to extinguish it quickly if you do have it (think Stores #2 with all the paper and cardboard in there).

Does the RCN need a CERA as well as the Environmental CPO to bring such issues to the fore?

I don't think the CERA or CPO are going to do much. They are not the knowledge holders on that stuff. The fire loading thing is held by the Officers and Civi's at FMF. Its pretty nitche. There needs to be a full education blast on it from FER likely.

@Navy_Pete IIRC could speak much better on this than me. They are an expert on this stuff and were the one who educated me on it (CSE, so fire loading not really in my wheelhouse).

As long as all the wood panelling is removable at action stations and can be stowed safely below decks.

And the CO’s cabin needs a cannon. Or two.

This sounds like a story. Or two. Which may require plausible deniability, or legal confirmation that the statute of limitations has run out. Or both.
I tend to believe it’s history from the days of ‘yor

The wardroom tables used as stretchers and surgical areas.

There are many more engineers on a ship than a MESO or CSEO.

I have probably sat in hundreds of hours of mess meetings on ships, and directed just about as many. I have never heard a single engineer bring your concerns up, but I have seen lots provide the same ideas, wishes and workmanship to make the messes look the way they do...

I am not saying your wrong here, I am just saying if engineers aren't going to enforce or even fight for they're own polices (looking squarely at you FTA as well) what exactly will be done about it ?

I could tell you a long story about mattress toppers that runs in a similar vein to this...

I think RCN leadership is nervous as shit to touch anything that would be within a miles reach of being considered QOL.

All of my hardest fights in procurement and materiel management have been directly linked to QOL and a damn the torpedoes (pun intended) view attitude of just making it happen.

Funny enough on CPFs the wardroom table is a secondary operation table with operating light installed above it.

Some things never change...
