I'll see if I can find the graphic of current USN carrier availability. That and their incompetence in getting a replacement for the OHPs is really starting to put a strain on resources. On the plus side, that means the Trump class BB should never see the light of day!

The issue at hand is not just their failure to effectively replace the OHPs, it's the subsequent retirement (ongoing - almost done) of their Ticos as well.

Theoretically, the DDG-1000 series would have been a suitable replacement for the Ticos, and if they'd built more than just 3 of them, they'd now be at the point where they'd probably have 8-12 of them in the water - enough to provide the VLS capacity for sustained engagements that seem to be the way forward.

The Burkes have been a steady success story, but they are overkill for some of the 'show the flag' missions that used to belong to the OHPs. The OHPs were also great to quickly flesh out a CBG.

With no Frigates left to speak of, and only 7 Ticos, the ABs have been stepping up, but the failure of the Constellation class, and the failure of the DDG-1000s means that their cupboards are pretty bare.

The "Trump Battleship" I think is a reaction to the need for a replacement for the Ticos, and the poor results of the DDG-1000s.

They need a bunch of VLS capacity that's capable of doing CBG defense, so fast, lots of cells, and AEGIS.

They also need a bunch of Frigates, with 'enough' VLS to be useful, but also helos and probably not AEGIS, but enough sensors to be useful as a fleet defense 'accessory' while still being capable of defending themselves in a dangerous space.

All I know is that, according to the US navy itself, the Roosevelt is on its way to relieve the Abraham Lincoln and is already listed as being on a 7 to 8 months deployment.

They are now staring from time periods that greatly exceed the normal 6 months maximum deployments of the past. I think there are people in Hegseth's department of defense that believe their own public relations: "A nuclear aircraft carrier can remain at sea indefinitely, as long as it is resupplied in food and aviation fuel".

Well, no! There is another limit, and an important one called human endurance. I can only imagine what such deployments will do for retention and recruiting.

Yes they did. They used rum at first, then switched to American whiskey. It was ended during the Civil War.

The source you quote only refers to "distilled spirit". It does not indicate that it was rum, nor that it switched to whiskey at some point. The 13 colonies did not produce sugar cane. They imported their sugar and molasses from the Caribbean at the time of independence. Since those were mostly under the control of England and the waters controlled by the Royal Navy, they likely switched to Whiskey from the start.

Don't believe the Spanish glossy brochure. Just look at Australia's experience with Navantia. The spanish ships are like new build house from a sketchy contractor. No primer under the paint, and shortcuts everywhere.

Well, in Spain they say that the Aussies were not able to "read" the drawings... But I don't know anything, I was not there, just the rumours...

Never knew Grog was a real thing. When I was a kid, my dad said he had to stop by the ‘grog shop’ (LCBO). I just thought he made up the word.

You dont dump people that have been that high tempo back into thw real world at home... Unless you want the USN to dominate the local news cycle for th3 first few weeks after return.

Except that, like our 'decompression port' on the way home from Libya (CHA), they'll probably make the crew report for a turnover parade on the Saturday morning, so you can't really have the fun you want on Friday night, and then you're busy with your handover to the incoming ship that's tied up alongside you (VAN). Then you'll work all day after that doing the turnover, so your 'decompression' is actually a Saturday night supper at a local restaurant instead of a Friday night of relaxation, Saturday at the clothing optional beach observing the sights, and yeah...generally decompressing.

In all honesty, I hope that port is ready because there's some pent up energy of way too many types on that ship after 270+ days out at sea, and I hope all the troops come back after their liberty safe and sound.
