Canadian River Class Destroyer Megathread

Well there's a solid positive!

We will see. In my opinion, it's not the size that matters, but the composition.

It appears the RCN is making a conscious effort to improve upon the crewing compositions models used for the AOPS and MCDVs, and that's a positive development.

From a sustainment perspective, the key will be ensuring that leadership and command teams understand that you cannot achieve CPF-level service and support with fewer resources. Overall, however, based on the numbers and positions I have seen, I am encouraged and optimistic.

Good to hear!

Now to open up a steady, increasing number of new recruits coming into the RCN and the corner can be turned.

I fear they have learned the wrong lessons, but hope to be pleasantly surprised...

Before I left Ottawa, the talk for sustainment of the ships was to have robust shore support coupled with extensive (in a Canadian sense, not a USN version) FLS for deployed units.
Don't know where they are on that idea now.

Rumour has it and of course I may be wrong is that 300 acre parcel of land in Eastern Passage will be a refuelling dock on the ocean side for the ships including the river class and across the main road will be buildings to support the river class which I assume is probably stores.

Because ashore logistics in Halifax totally addresses all your issues when you're mid Atlantic or south Pacific.

that is why they are building the JSS I thought. Now if they would only build two more you could have more confidence in my answer

So in addition to where the subs will be berthed/serviced?

Where did I suggest it would? I was passing along a rumour about what that land might be used for, not claiming a refuelling dock in Eastern Passage solves replenishment in the mid-Atlantic or South Pacific.

These ships will also need proper shore support, including storage and inventory management for the thousands of spare parts needed to keep them going. Those parts have to be held somewhere and available when required, whether alongside or deployed.

Shore facilities and replenishment at sea serve different purposes. We need both.

IF we get 15 Rivers, 12 subs, 16 CDC’s and 3-4 JSS, along with some Orca like boats for the coasts and GL’s, does there ever come the time that with all those ships, the production facilities, the maintenance facilities, the stores for the spare parts, ammunition, fuel, training classrooms and administrative facilities that Halifax runs out of space/brown fields to utilize?

You mean 8 Rivers, 6 Subs, 8 CDC , 4 AOPV and 2 JSS. Yes there's room. That's why there is a long term plan for jetty renewal and reconfiguration of infrastructure in the Halifax dockyard right now. This in addition to NAD across the harbour and Eastern Passage. As well we now can access CCG facilities in Dartmouth.

Yes, my numbers need to be divided by 2.
Glad to hear that the room exists.
I know that the piece of land that is being bought by the new car parking lot, for lack of a better term, will help a lot but it just looks to be ‘tight’ in terms of space and availability of unused land.

Well on the ship side its a new tank farm going in along with a fueling jetty as we don't currently have one. Across the road is a massive site that they working on right now. Lots of room for warehouses, offices etc.

The subs will or will not be there?
