Danish pizzeria owner jailed for refusing to serve French, German tourists

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) - A Danish pizzeria owner went to jail Tuesday for refusing to serve French and German tourists in protesting their countries' opposition to the U.S.-led war in Iraq.

A Danish court found Aage Bjerre guilty of discrimination and sentenced him to pay a 5,000-kroner fine, about $900 US. Bjerre refused to pay, and will now serve an eight-day sentence at a minimum security prison.
"I'm doing it to show my sympathy with the United States. It shows how seriously I mean it," he told The Associated Press by telephone.

"But one should also remember that eight days is a small price to pay when American soldiers go to Iraq and risk their limbs and lives," he said.
In February 2003, before the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq, Bjerre posted two signs barring Germans and French from his pizzeria on Denmark's western island of Fanoe. The signs showed human figures in the colours of countries flags, with a line drawn through them indicating "no admittance."

The boycott drew criticism in this Scandinavian country, where the government supported the war while its citizens were split.
The 46-year-old received hundreds of fan letters from the United States, but had to sell the pizzeria after repeated vandalism and a large drop in sales.

"I can't afford to buy a new pizzeria after all the money I lost on the whole thing, and other pizzerias are wary of hiring me because they know I'm sticking to my principles and still won't serve German and French tourists," he said.
He is bringing a photograph of U.S. President George W. Bush and first lady Laura Bush, as well as an American flag, to decorate the walls of his prison cell.

"I think that will brighten up the room," he said.

....

While I admire his tenacity, I agree with his punishment.

Should he emmigrate to the USA, open another pizza shop, and pull the same stunt, he'd have similar results.

I think denying service at a pizzeria to French and German people is a bit of a 'skewed' way to show support to Americans for the war...

The man stands by his princiles... I can only admire that. As an ordinary citizen, it was probably the best way to have his voice heard; if he had caved in, we woudn't read about it, would we !!!

Yeah, but I'm sure that if an equal story about a German refusing service to Americans or Danes with their own disapproval to Iraq, many of the members of this board would hound him for being an "anti-American socialist". Or something like that.

Either way you slice it, the fact that he uses blatant discrimination to get his views across is not exactly kosher, now is it?

Of course... what's wrong with that ???

No, no we would have not. I will agree that it's admirable that he's standing by his principles.

Nothing, really.

But its the fact that in one situation, the subject would be "standing by his principles" and defending the war, whilst in the other, the subject would simply be ill-informed, and perhaps a tool of the government and popular opinion.

It shouldn't matter whether or not it is his principle. Many people have been jailed on account of them. The fact that we should all agree on, is that he committed an offence, and should be punished for it. Would you not agree on this point, at least?

I don't. But, then I don't believe in any gov't legislating what a person can say, think, or write. I also don't believe that a gov't should be able to tell a person what they can/cannot do in their home/place of business (logical caveats, of course standing - ie. if it deliberately causes physical harm to others)

And for the record, if it had been Americans & Britons he had banned, I would say the same thing.

I don't necessarily believe in that either...but the fact remains, that while we do have laws that make the actions illegal, our beliefs in them, until they change, are just that, and cannot influence the final verdict.

Wow, talk about the most misleading headline ever. He just assumes that ALL French and Germans are opposed to the Iraq Invasion? Why doesn't he also refuse service to Danes who oppose the war?

A more appropriate headline would be: "Danish Pizzeria Owner Jailed For Being an Ignorant Prick" because that's what he is. I suppose you can debate whether people should be allowed to be ignorant pricks on their own property, but in any case the market would have taken care of him because I can't imagine how anyone would want to patronize his establishment after this.

Since he is now no longer in the pizza business, I guess he can go join the Danish army and really "stand by his principles" eh? You think he will?*

EDIT: After some further research, and judging by the age of the gentleman, I must conclude that it is likely that he has already served in the Danish Defence Force at some point, at least as a conscript. So I take back my last remark. The rest still stands.

Oh, you picked up on the headline thing, amazing how a small change of words makes a big difference on wether one reads the story or not.
Check out the headline that actually came with the story, who would have read it?
Amazing how witty one can be at 0600 waiting to go off shift.

How do you know I wasn't talking about YOUR headline? :)

OK point taken, the original headline wasn't so bad....

I meant my headline, very misleading, would you have read it with the properly affixed one there?

How long before someone compares this guy with David Ahenakew?

Opps ;D

Eh, I don't know, I might have not, since it woudn't have anything to do with the military and I don't generally come here for news about Danish Pizzarias.

....not to mention I put it in Radio Chatter, I usually just read here to fufill my moderatorly duties.

Now about pizzas, the best I ever had was in Norway so, hmm....

OK Bruce, you got me. You've managed to cleverly mislead me into reading and commenting on this topic and now I've made a fool of myself. The joke's on me. You win. Happy now? :)

Since we are in Radio Chatter, you might be interested to know that Rwanda is doing very succesful trials of prison facilities powered by Bio-gas generated from the feces of the inmates, a model that may soon be exported elsewhere.

*Bruce starts thinking about his get rich quick scheme*

They surely can't be as well fed as ours and that means,..........kids don't try this at home.
