The way to defend Canada from America is just to be a better neighbour.

Somewhere between the institutionalized scorn and sanctimony of the NDP and the Trudeau-Chretien-Trudeau liberals, and servile vassalhood, is a large region Canada could occupy.

Sure. He can state he wants all of Europe from North Cape to Gibraltar if he wants. I doubt Russia's capability to succeed. I doubt his spine to really call out NATO by making an unambiguous straightforward invasion of a NATO member.

In fairness I adhere to Niall Ferguson's notion of the British Empire being conceived in a fit of absent-mindedness. Phillip's "pirates" and Napoleon's "shopkeepers" were far more interested in securing profits from trade with the locals than they were in taking them over. On the other hand, their actions created the circumstances that made settlement possible.

They built ports in isolated locations and invited the locals to bring their goods to them. The local trade networks stayed intact until the arrival of the settlers.

I agree that money, lots of it, needs/should be spent on our military capabilities - capabilities that we control for the sole purpose of benefiting our own agenda.
As a result of that, being a 'better neighbour' would be a natural outcome of it.

The Harper conservatives can be accused of neglect. I refer to the tendency of some NDP and LPC members to indulge their own anti-Americanism at the expense of Canadian interests. Sure, the US should be an adult and ignore us when we call them names. But it doesn't help the relationship.

If Trump's bluster can be dismissed as routine and unsurprising, can longstanding and predictable NDP / LPC anti-Americanism be similarly dismissed as routine, domestically-aimed pandering to constituents?

Is one more damaging to the relationship than the other?

During the 3yrs of living in Boston I only once went into a ‘proper’ Irish bar there, when my best man came for my wedding came from Toronto and he and I went out for some pops a few nights before my wedding. We started in the afternoon somewhere off Newbury Street and I went straight to the bathroom and had him order for me. When I came out he was at the bar, the place was almost empty as it was like 3pm, and he was chatting to the barkeep. I walked up and heard the accent at the same time I recognized that the fellow behind the bar talking with my best mate was in the picture behind the bar. In the picture was the barkeep and Martin McGuiness. I gave me pint to my friend to drink and we left soon after that. My friend was Ukrainian-Canadian and didn’t have a clue.

Absolutely. It's unfortunate that we're the much smaller country, but that's a fact, and being insulting is a luxury we can less afford.

No idea. The consequences tend to mostly flow in one direction, though, and it's not a direction that benefits us.

The best part about NORAID supporters was that they talked about everything they were doing, alot, as is the custom of the wannabe Irish terrorist.

As a result, the FBI were usually able to easily penetrate their networks and shut down transactions like SAM shipments to PIRA.
