Anyone have any ideas why our defense minister is someone with no military experence?

Well the cabinet gets shuffled pratically every month, so in order to have a defence minister that has a military background, you‘d essentially have to have all the cabinet members in the army. If not, theres a slim chance of that happening.

Because policy is set by the government in this country, not the military. That is as it should be.

It is amusing to compare, though, the number of ex-servicemen in Canadian government and the same stats in the US.

The discusting thing is though is they don‘t even know our own Military History i.e. Vimy,Dieppe etc.

I think we do need an Ex service man/woman as defence minister because then you have someone who know‘s/knew what it‘s like to serve and can argue for our need‘s.

Well, when you retire from the army, run for office. Why can‘t you be the next Defence Minister?

The government should be run like any other business. I wouldn‘t hire an interior decorator to design communication systems. If you don‘t have experience, you don‘t get the job...period. I‘ll never understand why it isn‘t like that on the hill.

the defense minister isn‘t going to set policies though, hes going to say "Our military is capable of this while it is uncapable of these other things."

I think i brought up this point before . We were having a chat with a visiting general and he was telling us how much the CF was retaining it‘s soldiers, moral was really high and theres hardly any OT‘s going on and some people spoke up and said "Sir your wrong we have a LOT of OT‘s in the battalions and people are getting out way faster then they are getting in" and the general just looked at the sergeant like he was a 10 year old telling a lie, smiled and said he was just wrong. Everyone was shocked. The moral of the story is that if a general has no clue of the state of one of the 3 infantry battalions in the CF how will a defense minister with NO military experence have any idea whats going on in the military, who probably relies on those very generals for his information.
