Delta Airlines crash at YYZ Toronto - 17 Feb 2025

Took the info from the WX network's meteorologist, here is the quote. At the time of the landing attempt, the sustained winds were at 52 km/h, gusting as high as 65 km/h, from a 270-degree angle. The gusts are near the operational limits of the aircraft. The met station at Pearson is basically mid-field so there could be some variation. Windfinder was showing steady gusts of just over 35 mph. Furniture's info is the official line (thanks). Here is what I could find on the RJ limits.
Pearson has multiple wind towers that ATC has access to to provide data for the various runways. For official weather records, just like with Highlanders, there can be only one. Mid-field provides the best overall picture of conditions on the airfield for planning, and forecasting.

One other pedantic note, gusts by their nature aren't sustained. If they were sustained they would be the two minute mean wind, which is generally just called "wind speed" in plain language weather products. A gust is a short burst of wind greater than 15KT, and at least 5KT or more higher than the two minute mean wind.

Good on the SouthWest guys…no clue what the EasyJet folks were doing!

I always loved the big sky principle. It actually looks as if even if he hadn't got airborne again that he would have crossed behind but I sure wouldn't have wanted to bet on it. Wow

Now semi-explanatory to FJ560’smconduct crossing both 31L AND 31C, 31L is relatively narrow (60’) compared to 31C and 31R (both 160’ wide), and could actually look like a taxiway, although Foxtrot is the last parallel taxiway before they got to/past 31L. There was also signage and 31C would have f-off big CAT 2 RWY hold lights. Flexjet was not paying attention…Southwest was — good on them, their timely touch’n’go to a go around averted a potential tragedy.

The SWA pilot was cool as a cucumber. That was well done. Looked like he already saw and was going around when the call came from tower.

For the smaller jet pilot- what are the next couple hours of his life gonna look like following something like this?

I don’t know if that depiction was precisely the time and positioning, but it was definitely an incursion. Perhaps in retrospect, some would say that ATC could have held FJ560 on Foxtrot, until SW2504 passed 4L.

SWA2504: [calmly] “tower, how’d that happen?”

That guy wanted to punch FJ560’s lights out, I’m sure.

True. He may have switched over to terminal prior to FlexJet getting the “I have a *number for you when your ready to copy…” from TWR, but he’d know the guy got a deviation report for that.

Again, heads up move on the Southwest captain for keeping his pax safe and secure.
