While reading old threads i have often heard the advice to check ones personality traits against the profession there thinking of entering... however, i can not find any thread that breaks down the various trades into their respective typical personality profile. If we were to make such a list - not saying it has to be comprehensive - what would it look like?

wow, this was an unexpected response, with all the talk of needing to fit your personality traits/style with the respective trade youd think there would be a bit more feedback  ???

There is no thread that breaks down the trades by personality profile.  Most people know what they want to be when they grow up.  ;)
I don't, but then, I'm not grown up yet!!  ;D

Try these:

http://quiz.ivillage.co.uk/uk_work/tests/career.htm

http://uk.tickle.com/test/careerpersonality.html

http://jobsearch.about.com/od/careertests/a/careertests.htm

And for the whole lot: http://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&q=career+personality+test&btnG=Search&meta=

Are you sure you're not getting us to do your school work for you?  ???

We have no "sorting hat" here for you to try on and have your trade pronounced for you.  You could, however, go down to your local Recruiting Centre and speak with a military career counsellor.  In addition, a browse through the Recruiting, Combat Arms and other threads on this site might give you a flavour for military life in the various trades/branches.

In the combat arms, we prefer the broom handle approach.

If you ride the handle like a pony, you go armour.
If you throw the handle away, you go artillery.
If you hit something with the handle, you go engineer.
If you steal the handle, you go infantry.

In all seriousness, no one trait or combination of traits will make any individual right or wrong for the majority of jobs.  The individual is suitable for a job, not his traits.  This allows for a diverse team dynamic (which can sometimes create co-operation and conflict); a diverse team dynamic allows a group maximal approaches to mundane and unique situations.  Furthermore, given the reciprocal nature between situation and personality, a person may have traits that do not become salient until he or she is introduced to the new environment, and these new personality traits may conflict with prescribed combinations.

This doesn't preclude certain personal traits.  Soldiers need to be hard working, dedicated, courageous, team-players, and must be capable of making ethical and intelligent decisions under the most extreme of stresses.  After that, it's all gravy.

Some would argue that an individual is a conglomerate of his traits...

Sorry, just a relent of a "Psychology of personality" course...
