Domestic and Arctic Mobility Enhancement Project

now you have to ask why the Macks over Zetros or Rheinmetall lol?
Because the Macks were to be (and were) built in Canada. The additional points Mack (Volvo/Renault/Prevost) received for that, put them in front of the other bidders.

That wasn't the question

Not like there's a viable alternative to the BV10.
It's sad seeing how little is actually allocated for reserve use. Hopefully these trucks are depoted and can be drawn on weekends by reservists for good winter training but by the looks of it, only two-to-four are hard-allocated to the ARes, with the Royal Winnipeg Rifles in 38 CBG and the North Shore Regiment in 37 CBG.

The MSVS was not built in Canada. Final assembly was done.
That is a very large difference, it may have moved them in front of the others for the project but it means very little in terms of Cdn industry.

Well, it employed a number of Prevost staff for a couple years. That's pretty significant for the folk at Prevost.

The Macks won over Mercedes and Rheinmetall due to the points Mack were awarded for using the Prevost plant in Quebec. Not sure what other kind of answer you'd want.

to put HIMARS on

Never heard of this platform. Any claims to fame for it?

Edit: Ah. Made in QC. That said, the hybrid drive seems interesting. Maybe a couple prototypes need to be bought and if it performs just as well, why not buy local?
We need a CAF program that only buys local and in small numbers for trials and to encourage domestic production.

Would it be worth it to add an options clause to the contract for 10 or 20 more and then offer them to other government departments, provinces, and territories? Then advertise it to those doing research and other government business in the north.

Tell them "We are buying a large fleet (for this type of vehicle) if you want one or two, we will have it built and sell it to you for cost. The economies of scale should make it cheaper than buying it yourself. Fair warning, you have a couple of years to put it in your business plan and scare up the money if you want in."

If people want in, we can order them. If not, we forget about it.

I wonder if we could make a business case for BAE to open a factory to build them here, and maybe even CV90s.

When I was in the CCG, they had a research fund you could apply to get money for finding new ways to do your job more efficiently. We used it to buy a ROV and Drone. This was in around 2005 and we bought a Videray ROV from the inventors in Nanaimo (who later sold the design to a US company), then in 2013 and we got a Phantom 2 drone.

We learned a lot from these buys and were able to do stuff we never did before and help out other departments as well.

Why? Nobody is going to be encouraged to establish a production line to sell the CAF a dozen vehicles, and the CAF doesn’t get a capability.

If our country gets serious about "energy corridors" for pipe lines and ports there is going to be an uptick in demand for more capable crawlers. You might find the Canadian Army has a wider range of homegrown options for domestc service.

UTV Canadian Bandvagn is one possibility. Perhaps Foremost can produce something like the MTLB replacement from Patria. We already have Roshel's F550 mods. Perhaps GDLS can take a few pounds and a couple of wheels off the ACSV and get us something cheaper and differently capable.

In addition we need something like DARPA in the US or CSIRO in Australia. We have NRC but it gets nothing like the political and financial support the other two do.
