Ebola: outbreak, Canadian/other response (merged)

Necrothread (no pun intended) bumped with the latest round ....

And if you're interested in tracking the Ebola thing writ large ....

And...... the Canadian-developed vaccine is apparently not effective on this variant.

Looks like this one flew under the radar for quite a while and the world’s playing catch up on an already very large outbreak that’s made it to a few cities… No bueno.

Arguably a ‘good’ thing about Ebola is it burns so hot and fast that it scares the shit out of populations and they generally play ball… Precautions work and are taken seriously by those with awareness. But it’s an agonizing way to go, and the case fatality ration for this strain is something like 40%. Bad news bears.

US-bound Air France flight diverted to Montreal.

Apparently an asymptomatic passenger was from a country currently banned by the US.

I heard a passenger interviewed on the radio who said they wouldn't say why they were diverting but all of a sudden the crew were wearing masks. 'Nothing to see here - everything's fine.'
Why are we allowing planes bound for the US to land that are banned.
Seems like America is using Canada once again. They need us for nothing other then a buffer zone for safety.
This plane should have been refused landing in Canada. Let the US figure their own problems out.

How big is the airport at St. Pierre & Miquelon? :)

Probably not big enough. It might get down, but it might not get up again.

AI says:
The main runway (08/26) at Saint-Pierre Pointe-Blanche Airport (FSP/LFVP) in Saint Pierre & Miquelon is 1,800 meters (5,906 feet) long. This paved runway is suitable for turboprops, regional jets, and some Boeing 737 or Airbus A320 aircraft.
The landing distance for a Boeing 777-200 (B772) varies based on weight, runway conditions, and weather, but typically requires a runway length of around 1,565 meters (5,150 feet) at maximum landing weight.
The Boeing 777-200 (B772) typically requires a takeoff distance of approximately 2,070 to 3,100 meters (6,800 to 10,170 feet) at Maximum Takeoff Weight (MTOW) under standard sea-level conditions. The 777-200ER variant usually operates within a similar range depending on payload, airport elevation, and temperature

It wouldn't be outside the ralm of probability for the current US admininstration to force it down outside the CONUS.

Do we want to be the nation that tells a plane to land in the ocean because that is preferable to putting people in a quarantine?

No, we permit them to land, refuel, and fly back to France without letting anyone deplane. Air France being refused landing rights in the US means we refuel them and send them home.

If the crew have timed out, Air France can fly in another crew. And we can provide catering service to feed pax and crew, but nobody leaves the plane.
