Park officials drawn to scene cited him for not securing campsite

HELEN, Ga. - A former Marine killed a bear with a single blow — by tossing a log at its head.

The bear had snatched the family's cooler from their campsite in a national forest in northern Georgia. The 300-pound black bear was taking its loot back into the woods when Chris Everhart's 6-year-old son threw a shovel at it. Everhart says the bear started charging, so he grabbed the first thing he could find, which happened to be a log from the family's firewood.

Everhart lobbed the chunk of wood, hitting the bear in the head and killing it. "(I) threw it at it and it happened to hit the bear in the head," Everhart said. "I thought it just knocked it out but it actually ended up killing the bear."

The close call earned Everhart bragging rights — and a ticket. Park authorities say he didn't properly secure his campsite.

He gets ticketed for possible saving his son's life, i wonder how much it will cost him.

no he got ticketed for not properly storing his cooler so a bear couldn't get at it. We always hang ours high in a tree far from the camp site when were out in the bush

Failing to stop your stuff getting stolen by animals is a crime in the US?

Wow.

I don't know if it's legal or not in Canada, but we get the same warning when entering a campsite :
secure the food...

OMG  ::)

My impression is that he got a ticket from the park authority. As I'm sure you are aware, rules about almost anything can vary from park to park, municipality to municipality, state to state.

My HOA, for example can leave me a ticket (and fine me) for parking overnight on the street, or not bringing my garbage can in... that doesn't mean it "is a crime in the US to leave your garbage can out"

Ummm, no. Here park regulations are standard. There are very few changes from one municipality to another, and these are primarily to do with whether it is in the city or a rural area.

Well clearly in your part of the world it IS illegal to do that. How else can they charge you?

But yeah OMG ::)

Uhhmmm but yeah OMG.... ::)

Clearly, in that part of the world, it IS a crime to not properly secure one's food from the wildlife (thus preventing incidents like this ~ but the asshats never seem to learn) or else how could they have charged him?

Get a grip. Thanks.

So, just what is a 'Trooper Sergeant Major' anyway?
It's a bit of a joke thing we've had going in our unit for a number of years and isn't a real rank. Whoever is the longest serving trooper has that title bestowed upon them. It's just a bit of fun.

Isn't that exactly what I just said?

Not sure why you are having a go at me here after agreeing with me.

Maybe you should add that to your profil, as the line "rank" is for reals one...

Yrys used wikipedia earlier and post it, but it got erased.

I'm not sure what I should read with the Google links...

It is interesting that Trooper Sergeant Major was a real rank, (I certainly didn't invent it). Goes back a long way too. A google search show up references to the Maori wars (which Australia was involved in). We also have the unusual rank of Queens Corporal which is given to a trooper/private after 20 yrs service, without having to do a promotions course. It's the equivalent of LCPL. That said, TSM holds no real rank authority, but is still the most senior of the diggers and holds a position of Crew Commander / section 2IC / similar.

Wouldn't get too worked up about it though. The thread is not about rank after all. Maybe recceguy should have used a pm if he wanted to question me rather than taking it off topic? No biggie either way.

Yeah, I think she should have done it ...
