hello,

My boyfriend is almost done his BMQ in St. Jeans and then he is going to Borden for cook trainning. I know that for the navy you can be sent to halifax or B.C. but i was wondering if there is anywhere else you can be posted. As well when you get posted how long does it take for your family to move there with you? Or what about when you are gone on tour what happens to the family do thay still get to live in the place where you are posted? And one more question I know in the reg army you can move around from base to base about every 2 years or so i hear, is it the same way in the navy or once you get posted to a ship you stay there for the remainder of your career? Thanks and i am sorry about all the questions I am just trying to find out as much as possible...Jenn

Jenn,
You have to remember that just because your BF wears the naval uniform that is not a guarantee he will wind up only serving with the navy. Whereever there is a CF unit that has a need for a cook he may end up there.

The crews of ships are always changing. when you get to a ship you serve on it for a while (around 2 years for officers don't know if its the same for NCMs) and then you get a land posting you are not on a ship for the rest of your career. Also cooks work everywhere it is quite possable to be posted to an army or airforce base. As for moving I remember when my family moved we moved during the summer and were given enough time to get settled. If your boyfriend goes on tour like NATO that is not a posting so your residence will stay wherever you are posted. If I were you I would try to get posted to Halifax, its a lot better then any other place, but then again I am a bit biased.

Hope this helps.

For NCMs its usually 2 to 5 years. It fluctuates depending on how short your trade is. As for the rest of your statement andpro you are out to lunch. I have served on the same ship twice, before and after a shore posting.

I didn't mean that he would not I just meant that he will not be on the same ship th whole time. I did not say that he would never be on the same ship twice. If you took it that way than that was my fault, I will change it.

andpro,

I think you should preface every post with "I am only 16 and I have no military experience and I really don't know WTF I am talking about."   That way uninformed people will take your posts with a large block of cow salt.

Once your Boyfriend has a posting message and is finished with his training he will be entitled to a HHT (House Hunting Trip) or a HIT (house Inspection Trip), there will also be a relocation leave and time for the load, unload etc. etc. Yes, the family gets to live where they are posted while he is on deployment and there is a support network for families of those who are deployed, this network will vary from base to base and even from unit to unit but it is there regardless. Postings in general are for a lot longer than they used to be (generally speaking) and can go for many many years more than in the past (13 yrs is the longest one I know of here but that too will vary from base to base). There is no need to apologise for your questions, if you don't know ask, someone on this site will have the answers for most of them. Cheers.

hello again,

Thanks a lot for all the help...i really appreciate all of the help you have given...i now understand a little more...thank you again...Jenn
