I am a "master of several languages", i.e. a native speaker, and have three university degrees in foreign languages and interdisciplinary area studies coupled with a quite remarkable set of skills and experience, which, I hope, can be used somewhere for the practical purposes. To add, I am a foreign-born Canadian citizen, female, not particularly young. Doesn't look great in terms of getting a job, is it? Will I look like a complete idiot if I show up in the CF recruiting office? For some reason, I believe, I can be quite useful for people in uniform.

You are up waaay too late.

Sparrow?  Wasn't that a Cold War term for a female agent with a specific skill set?

Try the on line sites first, also the government of Canada and External Affairs sites.  If you are "Too Old" for the youthful vigor  (Ha Ha Ha ha, sorry) of today's forces, your skills will no doubt be of use in other, more productive places.

Compulsory retirement age is 55, with some extensions to 60.  If you are forty. you might get twenty years in.  Then again, you may want to join the reserves and pick and choose your employment.

What languages?

What origin?  You might have to wait until Hell freezes over for your clearance?

Are you wanted for anything back in old country?  (Don't tell me, just think it over - you will have to tell a recruiter).

The DND recruting site notes under the Intelligence Officer job description that in special circumstances the Int Branch will recruit applicants directly through the DEO program, this is usually reserved for persons with unique linguistic abilities.  You might want to consider that.

Have you thought of CSIS,the Communication Security Establishment, DFAIT or something along these lines.  With a skill set like that I am sure they would scoop you up as long as you have a clean background.  Like TCBF said, your age might be a factor with the Armed Forces, but with these other agencies I doubt it.

But TCBF's right, if you were born outside of Canada and have lived outside of Canada before then be ready for a loooonnnngggg wait.

With your skills I am surprised you haven't landed a plum job in Ottawa yet?

Good Luck!

Many thanks for your replies and advice! Honestly, I didn't expect any. There are two points I'd like to make here: first, I have no idea about the term "sparrow" used in a Cold War jargon, so, sorry for troubling your memory, for me it sounds neutral; second, I think I'll try to file my applications to the agencies mentioned, even if I have to wait for a considerable amount of time to get an answer from them. It can't be helped: as an ancient Latin proverb goes Festina lente! (which means Hurry (up) slowly!) And, thank you all again!

No problems, good luck, and feel free to come back with more questions if the need arises.

Sorry about the sparrow joke.  ;D
