How does the pay rate work?

I see that the pay rates are different within each rank but how does it fully work, do you get a higher pay within how many months or years you've been in or does it permanently stay the same until command decides you have earned the pay and rank. (Only asking because I know how the U.S Military pay works but totally clueless on how it works with CAF)

You will start out at the basic pay rate for your rank and move up to the next level after being in your rank for one year. Each subsequent year in rank you will move up one level.
