Hey all..

I was relatively active on this board, had applied as a Sigs Officer and was waiting to hear when I went on vacation. That was about 4 weeks ago (June 19).

I called the recruiting office on June 23, and they told me that all the spots had been filled, and I was rejected. I was quite upset, but I had my vacation ahead of me, so I put it out of my mind, and frankly was quite over everything. Everything happens for a reason, etc...

My wife then gets an opportunity for a transfer (she works with the RCMP) that is an excellent career opportunity for her in Edmonton. We talk, and since I am not joining up with the army, am more than willing to go and find a new job there.

Well, at work this morning (we haven‘t moved to Edmonton yet, that comes in September) I get a phone call from the Capt. at the local recruiting office.

They are giving me an offer as a sig officer.

Well dammit, how confusing can things be?? Now I am torn between this and that... Anybody‘s thoughts?

How often are families moved? Is anyone her a sig op or offier? If so, how often are you away on tour?

Has anyone here been in this kind of boat?

ciao..

Oh man – when it rains, it pours…
From an unemotional standpoint, you’re the one who’s definitely going to be working until retirement age. Do you guys have kids already? While I’d be happy to be a Mr. Mom myself, it isn’t my first choice (and going back to work and leaving babies with me isn’t my wife’s first choice either).
But barring that, maybe you could make it work – you’d be away from home anyway for a yearish with basic and SLT, and then however long Phases II-IV are (and you probably wouldn’t want to be moving the family to Gagetown for three months for Phase II and then on to Kingston, or however Sigs training goes) – so there’s almost two years where it doesn’t matter where the rest of them are because they probably won’t be with you anyway. And then maybe you could get attached to the PPCLI in Edmonton…or maybe your wife will be sick of her new job by then ;)
Yoicks. Good luck.
Cheers,
Ralph.

That is tough. Is this a reserve position or reg? If it is reserves, maybe enroll and transfer to Edmonton. Regs...thats tough. My wife gave me one shot at the regs, and when my VFS came later than selection, my hand was called. I know the feeling.

Its good to hear you did get a position though...that can be tough outside the navy these days

Well, I spoke with the Captain at CFRC today..

he offered me a job as a Sigs officer, with BOTP commencing Sept. 15...

I declined.

I need time to move my family and get them settled, but I told him that come the new year to notify me of openings, as I will be more than interested then..

So I am not in yet... but a few months. I need to make sure my wife and daughter are comfortable in the new digs first.

soon... soon I will be in St. Jean... but not until 2004.. :-)

Sounded like an incredibly tough decision.

Kudos to you for sticking with your loved ones, however. That takes a lot more guts than taking Basic Training :)

Good luck applying in the future - hopefully things will go a little better.

It‘s a lot tougher (with a lot less glory) to be a responsible husband/father than an officer. Their need won‘t go down between now and the January course - and the board sits in the fall, so you won‘t have that long to wait. Hopefully you can be put at the top of the waiting list for next time.
It‘s a choice that separates the men from the boys, and you made the right one, IMHO.
Cheers,
Ralph.

I really believe that you made the right decision by declining the job offer; it was to help your family get settled in their new home!

If making important decisions makes a good officer, then you will make an excellent officer, in my opinion!
