At sea? Pretty soon based on some stuff I've seen. On shore? No idea.
What do you for see ?

The new UAV plan. They've done some preliminary work in IDing UAV's that can transfer pallets between ships. Not needed right now as JSS is still to be introduced, but its on the board. What do you for see ?

Arty Bns are standing down OP Btys in April, establishing ATGs, while the STA Btys will be in flux. In 1 RCHA C Bty will form the nucleus of or LRPF with NCOs and Officers going off on probably HIMARS course to form the cadre until 3 RCHA stands up and 1 moves to rockets.Wantedto tee up and see if anyone is hearing anything interesting on the CAMO front. Been pretty quiet for a few months it seems. We have to be getting into thr brass tacks at this point several months down the road.
I've been playing with my napkin army and long ago decided that the OP battery should be converted back to a gun battery. Tactical groups should just be a large troop inside the STA battery. In some ways FOOs are "sensors."Arty Bns are standing down OP Btys in April, establishing ATGs, while the STA Btys will be in flux. Good to see things are moving on HIMARS.
Incidentally saw this article in the Stag. Very interesting. It's a good idea to get gunner stuff up north for experience in doing the math up there. IMHO, the right weapon up there is HIMARS rapidly shuttled in by CC130 and out again.
Welcome back to my army.STA and OP troops will be part of the gun Bty.
The Americans go partly that way albeit the folks involved still belong to the brigade's arty regiment. I'm not sure how they'll handle it once they go to full div arty. My guess it will stay the same way with habitually associated arty battalions to manoeuvre brigades.I largely differ in that I'd have the OPs in their supported units vs in the artillery regiments.
The issue is training. A battery with its own BC FSCC and FOOs can train by itself to level 4 and 5. It's also problematic when battalions are far away from the brigade, like 2 RCR and 2 PPCLI. One way or the other folks need to travel for exercises. The important relationship is more with the supported commander than with the gun CP who should be able to take anyone's data... if FATES wasn't ass. An OP battery is a reasonable compromise we're a bit unique in doing it the way we do.
It's a good signal and a way of figuring out what works and what doesn't (including hydraulics - grease, oils, nitrogen in recuperator cylinders - all that needs to be trialled)Yeah we'll see how it goes. They're going to shoot some illum just to say they did it. I anticipate some blown hydraulics lol.

Not yet. In all honesty we haven't gotten the systems yet so its fairly premature. Nothings being built in Shilo at this time either. It's a good signal and a way of figuring out what works and what doesn't (including hydraulics - grease, oils, nitrogen in recuperator cylinders - all that needs to be trialled)
Are there any physical signs of 3 RCHA standing back up yet? People? Office space? 3HA was my alma mater. I'd ended up in each of G, H and J batteries with G the longest.

It gets back to our Brit heritage which was different from the European and American derivative of that. It's a peacetime/wartime thing. In peace you organize to simplify admin and training. In war its different. You won't see your FOOs and BC hardly ever, which is why we have BKs to command and run the gunline and echelons.Just about every NATO army but us has the FSO / FSTs organic to maneuver, we're weird outliers. The Brits have "tac batteries" that are all OPs. Just like how our fire discipline is unique - which sort of affected interoperability but i digress.
One thing one should never forget is that the continental system (including the US) was built in the past on masses of conscripted, poorly trained personnel that put the dumb up front and the decision makers in the rear area. That went to the way they did arty with 2nd Lts as FOs and a major at the battalion FDC.I mean in theory, but if youre not responding to a ma ever elements requests / requirements are you recalling training the FOO / BC? I ran into a Latvian friend of mine in Gagetown last week, hes doing our Arty Ops, and for him having to ensure supporting batteries send FSOs is so back wards, the Bns have their own FSOs by default.

My biggest issue, and I'm not sure how to resolve it yet, is the integration of gun and rocket fires and loitering munitions. That's why I wonder about having FOOs as part of the "sensor" side of the world where arty is divided into: sensors; coordinators/controllers; and effector/launchers. I'm not forgetting the liaison/advice function FOO/BCs provide. To me, the STA battery is actually a forward element rather than a mostly ignored appendage. It needs better kit and a better purpose/
To be totally honest a lot of those former conscript / continental system using militaries are leaps and bounds ahead of us. Our success is inspite of our system vs because of it.One thing one should never forget is that the continental system (including the US) was built in the past on masses of conscripted, poorly trained personnel that put the dumb up front and the decision makers in the rear area.
