It is my understanding that the Canadian Forces will be pulled out of Afghanistan as of Febuary 2009. Can you guys see that happening, or the date being extended? Give me some input...

Cheers

If the government says it will happen, then it will.

Orders come from the top and work their way down....regardless of what the troops think.

From what Harper has said their needs to be a consensus in parliament, and if their is none by lets say mid 2008 I think it would be safe to say Canadian Forces may be pulled out altogether or moved to the north. I don't see us staying, especially if before the 2009 date if Harper doesn't get a majority in the HoC, and so far it doesn't seem likely.

But that's only my observation of it based on what the news has reported.

It's still a little early to toss in the sponge.

It's a test of wills and resolve.

On the opposite side "bring 'em home" is an easy sell.
You can teach a monkey that war is bad.

The hard part is.................. drum roll please.
To get Canadians to understand what it's about.
It's nearly impossible to be pro - war.

It's tough to sell the idea that a little pain now avoids a giant pain later.
even if history is full of examples.

Now if there were only a group of like minded people
connected through something like the internet -
who could share their knowledge and understanding.........
I wonder where such people could be found.

Hmmmmm      -    FYI  - That's as sarcastic as I can get.

If the Conservatives don,t get a  majority Gov,t the Canadian forces will be painting buildings on Parliament Hill, running peace camps for youth and planting trees in northern Canada until they are needed for the next great Canadian emergency like snow removal or crowd control at peace rallies. Excuse me while i fall on my sword....

I'm not sure it's not a bad idea for Afstan combat ops to end in 2009.  However, I think Layton could be corralled into supporting a return to Kabul in aid-to-civil-power and training roles.  Some of his voters wouldn't like that but if the Libs, Tories and BQ signed on, his few political instincts would kick in.  Here's why I think the main force should rotate out in 2009.

1.  Taking a time out from Afstan would allow experienced troops to return to Canada and join the training system and its increased recruit population.  It would also allow any depletions in materiel to be assessed and resolved.
2.  There's no shortage of places needing help in the world although places like Lebanon, Cyprus, Sudan and Sri Lanka would just be exploited by the media to create more division at home by playing ethnic communities off each other.  Instead, for instance, Canada could start playing a part in Pacific security by joining/replacing Australian deployments with to settle places like the Solomons, East Timor etc. where the Aussies have been pretty much doing it solo to date in addition to their Iraq/Afstan duties.  Politically this might be a runner given the general meeting of minds and exchanges of political operators between Howard and Harper.  South Korea, taking a turn from a US battalion or two, could also be an option although again you'd wonder if the media would try and stir it up in the local Korean communities especially here in Toronto.
3.  The departure of Canada from Afstan would force NATO to confront some awkward truths about the nature of ISAF, of caveats and of the 8,000 non-ISAF US forces in Afstan and how what they do they do affects ISAF.

This pretty much sums up my take on Layton and his ilk....

And who are you?

That profile is pretty blank, so I see little for people to respond to.....
