Kinda looks like the one a certain Strathcona I know used to use to critique the young officers at the end of the trace ;D

Socks, Grey, Wool:

Best piece of kit ever issued! Would like to lay my hands on about a dozen pairs (new) of them.

I can think of a certain former senior officer with a bit of a sock fetish who if he saw this would have a c-c-c-c-coronary. 8)

Cdn webbing as fol (from 1937 to 1982)

1937 ptrn (WW2)
1951 Ptrn (updated 37 Ptrn)
1964 Ptrn (Velcro wonder with no mag pouches)
1982 Ptrn (used until replaced by TV, and is still be around)

I was issued 51 pattern webbing and an 82 pattern ruck in 1987 for GMT in Ottawa.  Complete with small pack.

. . . who was the very last soldier in the west to be issued the complete 1952 web gear? Hint: it was issued in 1985 in Victoria BC. well tell you in awhile.

Probably the last soldier to begin serving a sentence at the military prison in Edmonton.

1951 Pattern web is still issued to prisoners in the Military Prison in Edmonton as it is difficult and time consuming to clean and maintain.

I don't know if this is still the current practise, but when I was there in 1986 (87?) (as a visitor) and again in 1998, the '51 ptrn webbing was part of a prisoner's layout (including mess tins).  Ahh...steelwooling the eyelets down to bare metal and either shining them or re-blackening - sounds like fun.

I think I found a picture of the gray sock you are looking for:

I agree with your assessment. I have a drawer full of various vintages. And in case you are wondering, I have not matched the coloured toe threads which makes me a s-s-slovenly s-s-soldier.
