Hello

I might be joining the Queen's York Rangers Armoured Reconnaissance unit (Reserves). I have still to speak to a recruiter

I'd also like to know what the schedule is like for the reserves during basic and after i know it's explained on various sites but I'm getting mixed messages and trying to clear that up and I apologize to those of you that answer these questions a million times

The thing is that I'm currently finishing high school and soon headed for university and I want to know how much time I will commit to the Reserves and whether I'll still be able to get good grades with the lost time.

Is the training every weekend "leave Friday come back sunday" because if it is i doubt I'd still be able to handle my course load

And what is this about Wednesday nights is this additional to every weekend or what?

***

Also I have a friend in the cadets that told me that even though Reserve service is completely voluntary if you quit they can still haul you back in if the army is mobilized...    Is this true? do I have any commitments after ending my employment?

What else do I not have control over as a reservist? I know they cant send on tour without my consent and all, but are there any other obligations I should know about?
(I don't know if I'd like to go overseas yet I'd have to get my feet wet and understand what I'm in for before I know)

Once they help with my education paying 50% up to 2000   a year does that oblige me to any type of service after university?

Do they help with university in ANY university program?

***
I hear you can participate as a reservists in domestic ops locally. If anyone knows anything about what these have been in the past I'd like to hear about them.
How often to domestic ops take place?

***
I'll probably post some more questions later on I know I have them.

Thanks

Oh yeah I'd also like to know if anyone has any idea what the avarage mark is for acceptance to the RMC.

(notice that I didnt ask for the minimum to apply but what marks ppl have that actually GET IN)

thankyou

I don't know what your intentions are but to me, it seems as though you're not looking to the Army as a way to expand your horizons, but more of a free hand-out of cash for university. *IF* this is the case, I'd seriously consider re-evaluating your desires to join, I think you'll find that people around here can get a little bit skeptical of those who come around here asking about the free education and then trying to figure out what the least possible commitment in return is.

In regards to your other questions, they have all been covered in one form or another here. Search the forum, search the recruiting web site, but most importantly, go see a recruiter, don't rely on a friend in cadets to give you the straight facts of what is involved. Once you have done all that and done your own research on the many questions you may have, evaluate what it is you want to contribute. If it's a free ride your looking for, IMHO, i'd say move on, don't waste yours or the recruiters time and let someone with the true desire to serve take your place in the process.

cheers.

I am currently both a reservist and a second year university student. Many if not most of the people at my unit currently attend either university or college, some in very demanding programs. Someone I know even manages to juggle law school and the Reserves, it's all about time management skills.

Yes, when you work on a weekend it's usually from Friday evening to Sunday afternoon, that includes if you do BMQ on weekends. It's not every weekend, however, and, again, if you manage your time wisely you shouldn't have any major problems.

Yes. That's a parade night, where you do additional training.

No. Not that I know of.

A perfectly fair question, important to know what you're getting into before you sign on the dotted line. The only time Reservists are required to deploy is if the government passes an Order-in-Council mobilizing reserve units. So, in other words, if the crap really hits the fan. Other then that, you can volunteer to go on tour and may or may not get it, it's a competitive process.

No. You can apply to get the reimbursement after completing basic training.

Any undergraduate program, yes.

Whenever there's a natural disaster, or any other domestic situation, eg.B.C. forest fires, the Quebec ice storm, or light snowfall in Toronto.   :D

Hope that helps, if you have any other questions ask away.

I did my 2nd, 3rd and 4th university while serving in the Army reserve (I studied Electrical Engineering with a full courseload) so it is do-able. Like Cpl Bloggins said, you have to know how to manage your time.

Regarding being called back after you quit the reserves.. Yes. When you are sworn in and sign the dotted line, read the fine-print very carefully. Upon release, you will be placed in the Supplementary Ready Reserve, for a year I beleive it is. Basically this means although you don't train anymore, and you've turned in all your equipment, you can still be called up if things go bad. (Once again involving the Emergency Measures Act, etc)

I'm sorry if I sounded like I was looking for a free ride or anything like that. I've been reading about the army day and night for the past week non-stop trying to get everything straight and most of my questions were answered I just just got straight down to the issues I'm not clear on. I believe it is fair for me to understand what my commitments will be once I join and what I'm in for. I also still live with my parents and they have to know answers to certain questions (as in.... "is my son going to get shot at on a daily basis..." lol)
Understandably my parents are a little worried.

Please don't misread me asking these questions about commitment as me not willing to make them, I want to know what they are thoroughly so that I can make and informed decision.

It's interesting that Cpl Bloggins mentioned law school because I'm considering studying international law and if I can swing it practice law with the millitary.
(believe me I know how hard it is)

I've actually been interested in the millitary for a very long time, my grandfather was a lieutenant-colonel in russia. I'm just doing my reasearch,

there is alot I do not know that I am trying to figure out. Pplease be patient with me and I appreciate your patience very much. =)

I'm actually quite excited about the millitary but it is a serious commitment and it's not something one should take lightly.

Thanks everyone for your responses, If I have more questions I'll be sure to ask.

Actually after reading some horror stories about the CFAT I have to ask (answer to whatever level you're allowed to discuss it)
What kind of math topics does the CFAT test cover? how about equating it to a highschool math course (Calc? Trig?)

How about topics I know you do sequences and series, am I allowed to know what topics it covers (i mean most exams let you know what the topics are)
I actually just finished my High School Differential Calculus course with a 61% final avarage and I'm repeating it next year, should i be worried?

Does anyone know a site with examples of the test?

I had many of the same questions you did when I was looking at the reserve. I went nuts trying to research all of the answers. May I recommend that if you are as interested as you are, go and speak with a recruiter as these gentlemen have suggested. If you begin the process of joining most of these questions get answered along the way, and if one of the answers really bugs you then you can halt the application process. I am almost at the end of mine and everything is falling into place nicely. Best of luck.
