This website www.dragonlasers.com and others like it sell laser pointers that are meant to be useful in combat zones.

I'm not so sure. Non lethal deterrant, pinpoint enemy forces, troop directio etc etc. Sounds good but can they really do it?

I have a $20 laser pointer for giving orders and pointing out things. It is usefull.

In combat? I wouldn't want a strong visible light laser pointer pointing back to my position.

I am not sure what you mean exactly by non lethal deterrant, but just be aware that permanently blinding your enemy is verboten.

I know some guys that bought airsoft green visible laser knockoffs of thier issued IR to use for their rear gunners.  Apparantly it works to keep cars back.  I prefer 26mm flares  :P

As far as using for target designation, most troops are already issued IR lasers/illuminators.

What originally started me thinking about laser pointers and combat was this article i came accross

http://www.defenseindustrydaily.com/2006/02/2000-green-laser-pointers-rushed-to-troops-in-iraq/index.php#more

Please forgive me for being dumb but what is a rear gunner?  Some one using a mounted machine gun on the bag of a vehicle?

Thats part of it. More specifically, its the gunner in the last veh in a convoy, is responsibility is the rear of the convoy and traffic coming up on it.

Thanks for the explanation. Being rear gunner in a convoy would not be so bad. The middle of the convoy seems like the most likely place to detonate a road side bomb.

This looks like a laser pointer used to direct fire. Pretty spectacular. Being clueless though, i have no idea what's happening.

.......and whether it's on zippyvideos or youtube or whatever, I don't think there's any need, whatsoever, to discuss how, why or with what we operate with over there.

You didn't seem to be clueless here,

November 4th, 2006  Umm, i would not use a 35mW laser pointer for playing with animals, you'll blind them. Any laser pointer over 5mW is class 3b which means capable of causing permanent eye damage.

As for wickedlasers, their service is outstanding but their prices are very high. www.dragonlasers.com does not have their reputation for service but has much better prices.

Folks,
Considering where he is posting from here is a good reason we follow OPSEC as much as possible on this site.
