If the constituents had wanted someone from that party, they would have elected the candidate for that party in the first place. Crossing the floor is essentially a betrayal of their riding.

I agree with you.

If floor crossing could on be be done by stepping down and triggering a by-election this wouldn't happen.

MPs don't have to tow the party lines, that's where they need to show their dissatisfaction. In their voting.

That would be quite something if true. I expect Carney himself will be a bit more weeds on the finance portfolio than would normally be the case; the finance minister may not be a role with its usual independent prominence.

I wonder if Carney would be tempted to take on the role of FM as well.....

Either way the country will be in a much better position if either of them takes on the role - anything could be better than having a former Journalist with zero business/finance background running the dept.

On Todd Veinotte he said he told Carney he would run but didn't want to be a minister because he needed to spend time with his family.

Well he is a lawyer and a politician after all, and despite me generally liking the guy, you can't expect someone with those credentials to be consistent in their position.

I'm sure he has his reasons. And I am sure neither you nor I will ever know them. I just hope they are in the best interests of the country first.

Well, if he wanted to do it that way, he'd have someone he could appoint as FinMin with some adjacent experience to groom up.

Guy used to be Quebec's finance minister. Ideal world: Carlos brings political experience into the equation while Carney gets to be fiscally "involved." We'll see.

And did he say that before or after he was re-elected?

Not everyone runs to be a cabinet minister - and I suspect most of us around here would be suspicious if someone said they were running to be in cabinet.
