Liberal Minority Government 2025 - ???

The supply increase has to be what people need/want (ie. where they need/want it). If rabbit warrens are built, they will undoubtedly be occupied if people have no other affordable options. Some of those people are likely to keep looking, and that demand should keep prices up in the places people prefer to live.
Agreed! Hence densifying to allow more people to live where they want. Some people disagree though...

DOGE-lite?

‘When we hear government efficiency from Carney, we’re worried we’ll see DOGE-lite’: public service unions react to new ministers Lightbound and Ali

Government efficiency and reining in spending. If Carney is legitimately doing that and it isn't standard BS that will be great
Shocking that the expanding bureaucracy is concerned by any attempts to restrain its growth...mostly instigated by the government of the day. There is a convention (IIRC) that Depts are reviewed every 5-10 years and pruned. Not seen any of that since 2015....

It’s already happening. In some cases started before Xmas. Not shocked that the the unions are invoking DOGE as they are trying to get sympathy. The fact is that we do not have a DOGE nor do we need it.

WFA teams are up and running. I expect more cuts and trimming back for at least two years.

Yeah for sure. Trump and MAGA are weaponized.

The fact is that we do not have a DOGE nor do we need it.
I like the idea in theory. Our government wastes billions and no one batts an eye.

Just the other day I was recounting having to "get rid of" a couple dozen 84mm rockets and thousands of 556 rounds. Trees really took a beating, all because handing ammo back makes the unit look like they can't forecast their ammo properly.

In practice you need an extremely ethical and transparent "DOGE" to work

DOGE was just a feel good thing to appease a base. Not only that, it was designed seemingly to inflict harm on their civil service much to the delight of the followers that then started to see the effects.

Yeah but we don’t have to create another department to go into other departments to make weird cuts without any knowledge of what they are cutting.

TB just needs to say where and what to scale back, set targets and let each department reach the target. Parameters need to be put in place in order to not have secondary unforeseen effects.

DRAP was a horrible exercise that saw capabilities that were not targeted affected and waste happened. Phoenix was a sad example of that and even today the effects of those cuts are still resonating.

WFA teams need to take a measured approach and truly look at efficiencies.

Speech from the throne and mandate letters will be a good indicator of things to come but a lot of it has started.

An issue is the 'lifestyle' that those that are about to receive this pile of gold from their (mostly), 'live within their means' parents.

I see people in my neighbourhood 15+yrs younger than me driving high-end cars, kids having the latest fashion clothes, vacations to the Carib or Europe, lawn maintenance crews, house cleaners, etc and I KNOW that these people make either less than my wife or I or make the same - but I've got zero clue how they are pulling it all off. Either their parents already passed along some of the inheritance money earlier or they have maxed out their home credit line waiting for their parents to died and pay it all off.

I bought a new car for myself 11 months ago (a Toyota Corolla Hybrid) and passed my 2008 Honda Civic (151,000km) to my 2 teenaged kids and all they do is complain about driving 'such an old crappy car' because their fiends got used Audi A6's, a used Infiniti SUV or in another case a brand new Range Rover - its unreal.

I still ask myself this question on any purchase over 150$ - 'Do I need this or do I want this'? Or even this question, 'If I do actually need this, how can I go about getting it 'X' amount cheaper? I guess I'm just old, I'm 55, and can still remember growing up in a 1 bathroom house that only had a tub, no shower. I can still remember the first time I took a shower in a hotel in Toronto when I was 12yrs old on 1 of only 2 family vacations that I can remember didn't involve visiting/staying with family.

Its a different world now I guess, those younger want to be seen as 'green' but won't live in a house with only 9ft ceilings, they need to have 11 or even 12ft ceilings. They want a 'green' battery lawnmower , not a gas mower because that's bad, but at the same time need to have their inground pool natural gas heated, without a solar cover, from mid-May to mid Oct constantly at 28c. Its crazy. The churn through new Apple phones like they are Pez dispensers but make no effort to even grow their own tomato plants in pots on their giant newly poured exposed aggregate cement patios.
True story.

Seing this first hand with two grown ass men just come into some of that generational wealth transfer. Neither owns a home or land. Neither have pensions or savings. What they have though are brand new trucks and boats. Loans for done of those over 20 years. Despite various advice they want newer and better boats and trucks.

Not every housing situation is the fault of the gvt…

In the end money is nothing but 1's and 0's on computers, it's meaningless really. A lot of people live like there's no tomorrow (#yolo) and max out their monthly budgets. At what age do you finally start to spend your life savings, 60, 70, 80? By then it's too late for a lot of people for various reasons. You only live once and debt means fuck all when you're dead.

At some point it catches up. Both will be working well into their 60s and 70s or until their bodies give out. By then they’ll have run out of whatever was left to them.

Plenty of homeless shelters I plan on referring them to when the time comes.

Cam we trust departments to do it on their own? Absolutely not.

I agree with you about bot making cuts without any knowledge of what they're cutting but we both know the government is full or people and organizations that make themselves seem more important and needed than they are.

They’ve followed direction before. It was the direction that was effed up.

Then you fire them. That simple. The last time they gave someone a GG award and a performance bonus for Phoenix. I’m glad they won’t be directing anything this time. Maybe with a more independant cabinet Carmey can get it done right. PS cap is a good start. What that cap is, is another issue.

We have a system, the system works if it is used properly. We certainly have no need to emulate the goat rodeo happening south of us.

It isn’t that every housing situation is the fault of the government it is that even for those being responsible they are basically screwed.

Every generation has those that spend every dime and live beyond their means. My uncle is a great example of that, the only reason he has anything is thanks to the military pension he has which pays pretty good and steadily.

The problem is if you try to be responsible you can’t get ahead. The average income in Canada is 55k a year, that buys you next to nothing in todays market. If you live in Toronto, or any other larger city which the majority of the country does, your pretty much unable to pay rent at that income let alone get ahead in any way.

So now you have roommates well into your 30s or live with your parents to try and save, in many cases paying rent to them to help them with the increased costs.

This isn’t even factoring in all the pensions our parents and grandparents relied on have more or less seized to exist so 20-40 years down the road we are all going to discover we are screwed and unable to retire as we were unable to save and get ahead as most money was going to living in the moment not planning for a future.

Pretty much the main way for anyone to get ahead without having substantial income like a doctor is inheritance which is basically luck of the draw. That only happens if your parents were spending wisely. There is lots of people who have reverse mortgages, helocs, etc. and are spending most of it in their retirement. Which is their right, just that it means their kids won’t get ahead.

When did they follow the direction before?

My only basis here is personal opinion. People tend not to willingly give themselves less benefits and perks.

If we want an honest and transparent effort to reduce government spending it needs to be a separate, non-partisan organization.

Then you fire them. That simple. The last time they gave someone a GG award and a performance bonus for Phoenix. I’m glad they won’t be directing anything this time.
Is the Phoenix pay system finally fixed? I seem to recall someone high up in the responsibility for Phoenix system getting a promotion?

Maybe with a more independant cabinet Carmey can get it done right. PS cap is a good start. What that cap is, is another issue.
I won't hold my breath his cabinet will be more independant.

We have a system, the system works if it is used properly.
This is words to effect of what Trudeau said when he was caught in one of his ethical violations. I don't recall there being any accountability or punishment.

We certainly have no need to emulate the goat rodeo happening south of us.
That flawed endeavor has still brought to light cases of money being wasted. I suspect it's had somewhat of a follow on here. Case in point the GAC webpage with all of our international spending projects mysteriously going offline for a few days right after the DOGE stuff hit the news. Mind you it probably just resulted them in hiding questionable projects deeper.

That's been the SOP here for years since the NDP got in but, of course, they tend to pass on the blame...

Frustrations boil over in B.C. legislature as more catch-and-release criminals reoffend

Vaughn Palmer: Conservatives hammer at B.C. NDP, but NDP notes crime and bail outside its jurisdiction

VICTORIA — Two Vancouver police officers were attacked and one set on fire while on patrol on the Downtown Eastside. The suspect was wanted on 10 outstanding warrants, several for violent offences.

In Parksville, a man was attacked in his own home. An assailant rammed a car through his garage, broke in, wrapped a chain around his neck and threatened to kill him. The suspect was arrested, then released on $500 bail.

Last month, the RCMP dismantled three highly sophisticated drug labs — staffed with chemists and stuffed with industrial equipment — in Pitt Meadows, Mission and Aldergrove. Two suspects were arrested, then released.

Those and other horror stories were recounted in question period this week as the B.C. Conservatives dramatized the failings on public safety, random violence and bail reform.

Summarizing the frustrating lack of progress was MLA Elenore Sturko.

“It is no wonder that a recent survey found that 58 per cent of British Columbians don’t feel safe in their communities,” she told the house.

“As a former police officer, I’ve seen assaults on police. But I was shocked to see the video of two Vancouver police officers set on fire last week. Thirty-five assaults on VPD officers in just over three months.

“How can British Columbians feel safe when the people risking their lives to protect us are under attack, and this premier is working against them?”
