Liberal Minority Government 2025 - ???

So we've found the line. Billions of liters of untreated waste water dumped into the River good, pipeline bad.
Have a look at how much raw sewage Hamilton has been dropping or has dropped over the last 15yrs.
It’s truly mind boggling

As it's the 25th anniversary of the Walkerton drinking water contamination crisis, discussion of human sewage (or cow shit run off in Walkerton's case) discharged into the water source is appropriate. It wasn't the shit in the community well that was the culprit (that should have been expected), it was the poor processes in Walkerton's water treatment plant that led to the deaths and illnesses. Billions of litres of sewage into the St. Lawrence (or Lake Ontario), while distasteful, is easily cleaned by conventional water treatment. Thousands of litres of oil spilled into the water source, on the other hand, has the potential to make the water source unusable for years/decades/permanently.

The last time (energy east) a company tried to get a pipeline approved, they refused to provide the information required by the Federal environmental review board on how they were going to safeguard the drinking water. They simply pulled their request for authorization instead and then, blamed Quebec for the denial.

Meet that safe crossing requirement and then, you'll see that Quebecers (the majority, not the eco-nuts) are not the obstacle they are made to be.

Carney did not use those warrants.

The Governor General did.

The GG did it because the writ had been dropped and the GG has the legal responsibility to keep government operating during the election period.

Had the warrants not been issued, the GoC would have shut down. No pay for the public service, RCMP or CAF. no government expenditures.
Thank you. I understand the need for it in situations where the Parliament isn't sitting.

The Liberals spent the last 10 years endeavoring to be the least transparent government, time will tell of Carney carries on that tradition.

Could the GG technically spend the next 1-4 years dropping special warrants and our Parliment not go back to sitting for any realy length of time or purpose?

No. Special warrants are just that - special. Barring any extraordinary circumstances, the would not be used.

And I am curious about what makes the last ten years "least transparent" compared to prior governments? It's a meaningless catch phrase.

Case of should vs shall.

Guess we'll see in the fall.

Just stuff like this.

So an ATIP'd document had items removed IAW the law; security teams don't disclose operational information about who stayed where; a minority government had the support of other parties in the house to not conduct an inquiry; people argue over "what is a hunting rifle"; politicians don't get informed or involved in day to day departmental operations (and if they did, there would also be outrage over that interference); and the CEC, an independent body, accepted the equivalent of a plea deal.

Been on the road. Just noticed the new cabinet.

Interesting that the new VAC minister is a first time MP with a history of running women's clothing boutiques in BC. Is the BC Liberal caucus that weak? Or is the Liberals' commitment to veterans that weak?

Any background on where McGuinty may stand on defence?

:unsure:

Well, he has a degree in Agriculture so I assume he's an expert in dealing with BS ;)

Apart from that, he seems like a vanilla 'Steady Eddie' long time Liberal MP who probably needed rewarding in some way.

My uneducated guess is that he'll be awful ;)

Transparency is a choice.
Were the Liberals obligagte under the law to censor everything they did? Like, they physically had to or goto jail kinda thing?

security teams don't disclose operational information about who stayed where;
There was no question where Trudeau stayed. The PMO tried to hide the fact it was him who stayed in the suite after the fact. Then they admitted it. Nothing to do with security; everytbing to do with damage control.

a minority government had the support of other parties in the house to not conduct an inquiry;
Wasn't every party calling for an inquiry except for thr Liberals?

people argue over "what is a hunting rifle";
Naw. Trudeau and Blair got caught lying and had had tonfess up theyre banning hunting rifles. It wasn't a matter of terminology and wrestled all know that.

politicians don't get informed or involved in day to day departmental operations (and if they did, there would also be outrage over that interference);
Transfering Canadas most famous serial killer is day to day operations? Not even worth a briefing note? You believe that?

His staff doesn't.

Nobody gave a shit about vets before, why would they now? VA is an autopilot portfolio. The government got briefly excited when vets were making the news for turfing themselves but after some brief public attention and a bit of parliamentary committee work, the portfolio faded from the public consciousness.

McGuinty is very well informed from his years at NSICOP. He should have a good grasp of both the publicly obvious, and the less obvious (but known to the intelligence apparatus) threats. But I would actually infer more about PMMC’s intent for CAF from the creation of the supporting Secretary of State for Defence Procurement position.

VA should be an autopilot portfolio! Its inputs writ large (w CAF members at x point in their careers, including y doing things likely to cause damage and z who have suffered some form of trauma) and small (Cpl Bloggins with [specific mental and physical health issues] is releasing in three months) are fairly predictable.

The bulk of the minister's job should be caretaking and keeping the veteran/VAC interface useful for the veteran. Would argue that the remembrance stuff is an odd fit: might be better under a joint office between DHH and whichever ministry is dealing with Canadian heritage.

I had a chance meeting with McGuinty when he swept through my workplace a few days before switching portfolios. He made an effort to talk to every officer on shift that day even though he probably knew he was on his way out. But, if he's going to survive in DND/CAF he'd better firm up his handshake.

He’s been a decent MP in Ottawa South. From what I hear his time at NSICOP wasn’t wasted and that he was well versed in that portfolio. Him becoming Public Safety Minister was an easy fit by all accounts despite the short stint.

Now how will he do as MND? No clue but if his last performance is even a small indication then I am cautiously optimistic.

It feels like CAF members see and treat the MND like career managers. We get this crazy idea that they're working for us and there to help us out.
For close to 15 years (and certainly the last ten) Ministers (and the rest of Cabinet) have had next to know independent authority to develop policies etc. May as well have cardboard cutouts.

It remains to be seen if the latest incarnations of the Liberals intends to push "power to the edge", although it seems very unlikely that they will...

I wonder who to believe:

Canada's new tariffs on U.S. drop to 'nearly zero' with exemptions: Oxford Economics
Canada has effectively suspended almost all of its retaliatory tariffs on U.S. products, tamping down inflation risks and improving its growth outlook, according to Oxford Economics.

Most tariffs on U.S. still active, Champagne says in contrast to Oxford Economics report
Canada’s finance minister insists 70 per cent of the counter-tariffs implemented by Canada in March are still in place

I completely missed that. Yup. That could be huge.
