Liberal Minority Government 2025 - ???

I stand corrected. It was previously stated that it would only be an Economic Statement in the fall, not a full budget.

The recently re-elected Liberal government isn't planning to release a budget this year, opting instead for an economic statement later this fall. But experts warn that not providing a fiscal snapshot could erode economic confidence and delay the government's agenda.
There was significant criticism of this when announced which is likely why they changed it to a fall Budget.

Where the F8ck is Michael Chong?
I guess competency and integrity is something the PP is not looking for.
Yet another reason why I will not support the CPC under the leadership of PP.
From the full Tweet posted above Michael Chong will retain his role as Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs - a role he's held since September 2020.

Cam we trust departments to do it on their own? Absolutely not.

I agree with you about bot making cuts without any knowledge of what they're cutting but we both know the government is full or people and organizations that make themselves seem more important and needed than they are.
My department just got nuked, 25% budget cut and associated positions. That was the department responding to fiscal pressures, no DOGE needed.

Carney did not use those warrants.

The Governor General did.

The GG did it because the writ had been dropped and the GG has the legal responsibility to keep government operating during the election period.

Had the warrants not been issued, the GoC would have shut down. No pay for the public service, RCMP or CAF. no government expenditures.
The sophistry and "just-asking-questions" around these conventional and completely normal levers of government are such a tell about the measure of good faith a person has. Of course it's now that special warrants are being called into question.

Been on the road. Just noticed the new cabinet.

Interesting that the new VAC minister is a first time MP with a history of running women's clothing boutiques in BC. Is the BC Liberal caucus that weak? Or is the Liberals' commitment to veterans that weak?

Any background on where McGuinty may stand on defence?

Seems like a solid pick. He's seriously invested in national security and was a competent chair of the National Security and Intelligence Committee of Parliamentarians. We definitely could have done a lot worse for MND as je truly understands the threats to Canada and has been regularly briefed on them for years.

I'm not too happy about Carney issuing only one mandate letter to all his ministers rather than individual ones.

It's good that "Protecting Canadian sovereignty and keeping Canadians safe by strengthening the Canadian Armed Forces, securing our borders, and reinforcing law enforcement." made it as one of the seven directives but, OTOH, there's less transparency here as to which direction Defence will be tasked to go.

I'm providing the government the benefit of the doubt until after the Throne Speech. I agree that I would prefer individual mandate letters but I will reserve judgement for now in fairness' sake.

Mandate letters created PCO churn and pointless reporting on initiatives that were "cloud shovelling".

And that might be the elephant in the room...

Poilievre’s biggest error had nothing to do with Trump, strategist says

“The biggest strategic error that the Conservatives had going into this election was pounding Justin Trudeau and the Liberals with tens of millions of dollars of advertising,” Teneycke told CTV News during Monday’s election coverage.

Years of attacks had Trudeau polling below 20 per cent by the time he resigned in January, leaving Poilievre without a favoured political punching bag, said Teneycke, who led Ontario’s Progressive Conservatives to three straight majority governments as Premier Doug Ford’s campaign manager.

“If Pierre Poilievre was fighting against Justin Trudeau – you keep everything else the same – we’d be having a Conservative majority tonight,” he added. “We went too hard in the lead-up to the campaign and we got rid of the guy who was going to deliver a victory for us.”

I don’t recognize most of those names. The majority of the ones I recognize, I don’t know them well enough to form an opinion.

IMHO, mandate letters lost their utility when Gordon Campbell made them public. Since they became public, they became anodyne, vague, full of flowery baffle-gab to make them next to worthless.

Mendicino to leave job as PM Carney’s chief of staff, many of called this, that he was only a temporary chief of staff

Yes and many here said/implied it was a lie and "we'll see". Well, here you go.

Just like the NHL players who missed the playoffs - golfing and boating in the Shuswaps.
Trust me, the ones that get RE-elected are the ones who meet with constituents, help with navigating systems & show up at gladhanding events. One former MP I’m familiar with was known as the member for Sarasota Springs because of how often he was in Florida. Some slide thru, but not as many as the cynics think.
