Liberal Minority Government 2025 - ???

On its face its a really weird policy to have but if you think of it, hiring people with disabilities preferentially is just good business for the government.

An able-bodied person and a disabled person have the exact same needs but the able-bodied has probably over twice the opportunities to find gainful employment. The disabled person can end up on the unemployment, long-term disability and live in poverty which brings along a plethora of health-care and social welfare considerations or they can be given that entry level job and save the gov a shit ton of money on all the other line items.

For someone with a significant disability, finding a stable public sector job that does a reasonably decent job is an incredible sense of security. Even at that it can be a constant challenge of dealing with managers not understanding or questioning their limitations, and piling more stress on because even though they can do their whole job, it might not look the same as everyone else- modified hours, breaks, more remote work, etc someone finding a job where their disability can be managed is absolutely going to be more likely to stick with and work hard for an employer that gives them a shot and treats them decently. For jobs that mostly involve using one’s brain, it can be frustrating to have currently or prospective employers who are unable to look past whatever disability they either visibly see, or are told is there. For a lot of people with disabilities, finding a job that will recognize their capabilities and employ them up to them can be incredibly difficult.

Very true, but many employers are loath to run up against human rights legislation is trying to navigate how to establish what a legitimate disability is a what its scope is.

Outside of employment, our daughter is a public-facing public servant in a space that normally prohibits pets, and there are rules to be navigated regarding service animals. We've all read stories about 'companion' animals.

Service animals need a lot of work in some provinces. BC and I think Alberta are very squared away, with certification and training standards and testing that must be passed. In other provinces it’s a total free for all; Ontario has no standards for the animal, merely a doctor’s note that it’s needed to ameliorate a disability, OR a visible indicator (like a vest) identifying it as a service animal. There’s lots of abuse. But, on the flip side, trained service animals are almost inaccessible to those without either a lot of money, or external funding. So civilian disabled poor are basically SOL.

Somebody, not me, said, "What a scam. They shouldn't even let you on a plane if you're that mentally unstable. "

I’ll give that person the benefit of the doubt and assume they’re just an idiot.

It has been knocking for 5 years or more but we need at least 5 years to build the infrastructure on top of 3 years to do the necessary due diligence on indigenous rights, environmental concerns, and provincial interests and that is added on to the 2 or 3 years needed to find the funding as no one trusts the government to actually deliver on their promises. By that time modular nuclears will have been perfected and the demand for natural gas will be dropping. We will have lost 15 years of top of market sales so we will bring our gas online the day prices drop permanently. Sigh

Industry has worked similar though, a lot of LNG projects got shelved in the 2018 time frame because of the price collapse the year before. Just like gov, industry isnt immune to short sighted decisions

The way I understand it, the only sector that requires service animal certification in Ontario is the Blind Persons Rights Act for 'seeing eye' dogs.
