Liberal Minority Government 2025 - ???

There was a married couple who worked at the A&W across the street from me about 4 years ago, from India

They both worked at India's largest cancer hospital prior to moving to Canada. She was a nurse practioner, and I believe he was a nurse.

Each had to pay an exorbitant amount of money up front to whatever professional association governs nursing qualifications here in Alberta, and each had to wait between 8 to 14 months just to have their qualifications confirmed

(I would have thought an e-mail to the hospital in India's HR department would have confirmed or denied the couple's previous employment/qualifications within a matter of days at most. And certainly wouldn't cost almost a grand to do.)

The protectionist demeanor of certain professional associations isn't always a benefit to us...
I know several people who have over a decade experience as millwrights who the college of trades (or whatever they call themselves today) refuse to allow to write their red seal for.

I have met a former Russian brain surgeon who was working as a health inspector because it was the quickest way to monetize their knowledge (4 years of university instead of going through the whole medical process from scratch).

Our red tape is our own worst enemy. It is great once certified but it isn’t a true measure of quality, more a measure that you somehow managed go get through our flawed system. If it was about quality we wouldn’t have a much more reasonable and speedy test to verify the quality. Instead we punish by process and attempt to prevent anyone who is a ‘outsider’ from breaking in.

Well if we build Gripens, then I see us buying the T7 redhawk from saab/Boeing and building it here too
While I know nothing has been decided yet, it would fit with Carney's pivot away from the USA.

Again, it's just the perfect storm. The USA goes full isolationist just as Sweden joins NATO and needs a strategic partner.

Granted, I didn't see us being a branch plant for Sweden, but being the branch plant of Sweden would be much better than being a branch plant of America because America operates under the illusion that they don't need Canada.

Sweden knows that it would need Canada if it goes down this path.

I can imagine that we’ve got a huge amount of the raw resources needed to create a fighter plane. Supply lines for aluminum, nickel, tungsten, graphite, copper,
etc etc etc are all here already.

who says its a one off? SAAB doesn't strike me as a company that would let a factory go idle, they already are working on the Gripen replacement, and other programs, my guess is this helps long term viability of their products
Is there a back-logged queue of international customers?

Arms and armaments aren't really a "push" endeavour that can afford to trust in "supply creates its own demand", not least because of the costs and the inevitable "national interests" that colour military procurement.

Sweden wouldn't be doing this just to sell a plane.

They did this before with Brazil. What does Brazil have? Embraer. So there is a track record here. If a nation has the industrial base, the resources and needs a fighter jet, Sweden will play ball.

Thats all to say, Sweden wouldn't be offering this just to make a sale. They are doing this because they see value in what we can bring to the table.

The yanks used to and used to have preferencial treatment from us, but those days are over.

@CBH99 I want to do you the justice of a typed response, not a rushed poclet screen one, that will have to wait until tomorrow.

Re- hypothetical Saab Canada. Step 1 is Gripen and Global Eye. Then:

GBAD project- MSHORAD conversions to domestic chassis. RBS 70 production, Nimbrix Production.

IFM Project- Mapams and Thor mortar rounds, BONUS and excalibur 155 rounds

CDC project- a prefered vendor to fill a host of capability gaps

Does our section level anti armor capability get boost if we swing for NLAW or CG84 production?

Not for a second do I think that all would/will happen. But its not hard to see one or more in addition to the planes

It is almost as though our extremely protectionist professional associations and the like prevent people from working in their fields by design.

They intentionally make it as difficult as possible to certify someone other than by their very difficult to get into ‘apprenticeship’ programs.

Doctors, Red Seal trades, hair dressers, etc. all make it as difficult as possible to certify someone. If you were said professional in a other country and can’t work/do your job/career in this country why would you stay when someone else will?
forget the international credits, nurses from B.C. are not qualified to work in Ontario unless they re-certify. The same applies to many other professional groups

Sweden is a country of 10.7m people.

Their industrial base is only so large.

Imagine you're Sweden and you get a country 4 times your size and a already experienced manufacturing base, with a aerospace industry and pipeline willing to work with you?
no pipelines

When I did background investigations for gaming licences, the number of foreign-born skilled professionals signing up to be a low wage table dealer was appalling. Our turf-protecting barriers are too high, but the folks who process visa applications need to realistically warn these applicants ahead of time.

Surely, the government must be able to create a list of foreign professional schools that have standards at least near to ours. A medical degree from U Tel Aviv or U Edinburgh should be known to have more value than one from U Upper Rubber Bootistan.
