Agreed it needs to be refocused on to what its goal was, making sure we didnt have homeless, poor seniors. The entire situation of elder care needs reform, my grand mother in law lives at a home that takes about 80% of a seniors income as rent, after medications etc she has maybe $40 a month of spare money. Its highway robbery especially for the low level of care she needs.

There is currently a bed ridden 90yo woman living in the same house as I am because of a very similar situation.

The senior's home cost, lets say, $1200 a month. Her income as a senior was $1200 a month.

It would have left her broke. So instead she has a worker that comes 4 times a day to help change her, shower her, etc



I understand the government wanting to keep costs under control, so they recoup the cost of staffing/maintenance by charging rent to the seniors.

But what if she didn't have immediate family in town? What if she didn't have $1200 a month coming in from OAS?


There has to be a better way to do this. I can easily see some folks falling thru the cracks who really shouldn't be allowed to fall thru those cracks

What I would like is a cap of say 30-40% of a seniors income can be taken by these facilities unless they make over X amount. Covid showed just how bad seniors homes can be, we can, and should do better for one of the most vulnerable parts of society.

Whose going to make up the difference? Should we just kill OAS in general and instead offer ‘free’ senior housing for those with assets below ‘x’ amount?

The reality is if there is no money in the service they won’t provide it and it will be worse for lower income seniors as they will just be homeless/lacking adequate care as no one will provide it at a loss.

Taking care of people full time is expensive. Cooks, food, nurses, PSWs, providing the housing, cleaning, etc.

Take that 1200$ a month, you can’t even rent a place in most cities for that price let alone get all the care, food, etc. added on.
