While I absolutely think any federal party leader, cabinet minister etc should be able to be cleared for TS, and I will not personally take seriously any who are unable or unwilling to, I don’t see how it can be made a legal requirement in practical terms. The Charter clearly lays out a broad right to candidacy for office, and I don’t believe voluntarily excluding oneself from being security cleared would justify abrogating that right.Brought to you by Bruce Fanjoy.

Well if the come out and say no, that would undermine the latest trade deal with china, as well as show political bias and interference in the national security reviews for such deals. Will it happen? probably not but because the answer aint no, it gives the conspiracy theorists ammo of the liberals being in bed with china.

There might be some legal wiggle room since Charter Section 3 only addresses the right to qualify to be a member of the House. The various jobs inside the Big House are largely parliamentary convention.
Which makes them even harder to effectively legislate or regulate, and it would also mean treading further into realms of parliamentary privilege.
