I mis-stated (or you mis-read). Since this announcement is about locomotives only, I was wondering about the rest of the train they will be dragging around, and that has already been answered. The majority of VIA's long distance, regional and remote service rolling stock is 65-70 years old.
The new Siemens equipment for the 'corridor fleet' (Toronto-Ottawa-Montreal) is not quite four years old. The legacy fleet of LRC and Renaissance (bought used from the UK) are being phased out of service - slowly.
