Liberal (Minority/Majority) Government 2025 - ???

Carney is always the smartest man in the room. If you're not agreeing with him you're wrong.

"But I'm sure it'll work this time."
The concept of PPP was relatively new and in vogue at the time IIRC. That was almost 35 years ago. It is of course possible that not only have economic and broader fiscal circumstances have changed, but also the basic framework of these kinds of deals have evolved. Finally, it is also possible that the mistakes of our fathers do not have to be repeated by us now.

I like the idea of the Government NOT spending my tax money on the operation of airports, and the indirect subsidy of airlines. Cost should be more directly attributed. If it costs more to fly, that cost will be borne by those who fly, not all taxpayers now and in the future. I also like the idea of reducing Government spending. Hard to argue with that.

Its interesting to listen to people talk about an issue, such as, less Government control, oversite, running of day to day affairs, policies that have been the bedrock of their parties platforms in years, decades past and have helped define their parties appeal to the their base, suddenly start opposing those same issues because the other main party has suddenly started championing those same platforms/beliefs. Its an issue that has caused me to turn away from defining myself as a member of this party or that party and to start looking at each leader/party individually for the time/place/event/situation that the country finds itself in.

For example: under Mulroney during the 80's and early to mid 90's, the environment was one the key planks in their party's platform, after all Mulroney has been voted as Canada's 'Greenest PM' in Canadian history. Today, no one in Canada would consider the environment as one of the main planks in the Conservative Party of Canada's stated polices. No one would think of the Conservative Party as a party for the environment. Once other parties took on this plank and made into one of their bedrock pieces, the Conservative Party dropped the environment like a used Kleenex in a hospital's emergency room.

You have so much more faith than I do.

We agree, and I see the value in it, for civilian airports. I just don't want to look back at this in 10, 15 or 20 years and go JFC that was a stupid idea.

I know you were low key aiming this at conservatives. But the reality is you just described the LPC and their supporters. Who have done a 180 since 2024.

Ummm see above.

The problem i see about private airports is, there really isnt anything to drive competition to get lower prices. Our major airports are too spread out, we dont have regional high-speed rail like Europe to offer an alternative. So what stops us from getting hosed by the airports?

Look, I'm very much in favour of free markets. However, I believe there are certain core public services that should remain under public control and be accountable to the people:
  • Law enforcement
  • Corrections
  • The justice system
  • Fire services
  • Essential utilities (water, wastewater, waste management, and power)
  • National defence
These are fundamental services that are tied directly to public safety, security, and the functioning of society, and I believe they should remain in the hands of the public rather than be privatized.

I also acknowledge that this list blurs the lines between the different levels of government. Some of these responsibilities fall primarily under federal jurisdiction, others under provincial or territorial governments, and others under municipalities. My point is less about which level of government delivers these services and more about the principle that they should remain publicly controlled and accountable to Canadians rather than being privatized.

And no I didn't forget healthcare. I am pro privatization.

I’ve seen too many instances of privatization which either led to higher costs and poorer services, or the service provider being subsidized more than the original public service ever cost the government.

Having said that, I would love to see liquor retail privatized. Prohibition hasn’t been a thing for a hundred years.

Bingo. Although some might argue that Abbotsford and Hamilton might be considered competition. But if you’re in Winnipeg, you’re hooped.

Oh I'm looking to apply this across the board to both the Connies and the Libs. There are too many examples readily available for both of them.

That is why I don't hitch my wagon to either of them anymore, whoever is making the 'right' decisions/policies that work for me and/or the country, they will get my support.

Chretien went on and on in the '93 election about 'scrapping the GST' in the Libs little red book and it wasn't Harper came along that cuts were made. Connies brought in the GST, Libs wanted to remove it, didn't, Connies came back in to power and they cut it. Flip and flop.

These two statements contradict themselves.

Without healthcare you have nothing. Why would you trust some greedy corporation with your life when it has been shown time and time again they will do whatever they can to make money at your expense.

I don’t know if you have ever dealt with insurance before but dealing with them well sick and needing immediate care and them arguing against the best treatment due to costs isn’t good for anyone.

Not saying our system is a golden hen which can’t be improved, theres tons that can be improved, but we can also do much worse.

Should we borrow yet more money adding to our debt and deficit to keep airfare prices lower? No thanks. If you want to fly, you pay the cost.

I find it difficult to align myself with the idea that the ability to move around the second largest country in the world in the fastest way possible is a basic right that must be funded by all taxpayers. Kinda how I feel about high speed rail.....

Suppose for the sake of argument the claims are true that privatized airports are often more cost-efficient and provide better service to users, and that these claims are based on empirical observation and comparison of privatized and non-privatized airports. Do random speculations and fears that privatization will increase costs to passengers continue to be anything more than vacuous?

Absolutely. The Carbon tax is a great example, and how quickly it went from Conservatives are trying to kill the planet by calling for the cancelation of the carbon tax to this is a good idea the tax wasn't effective.

Similarly, privatization of things like Airports.

For years the rallying call was Conservatives would privatize things like airports for their big corporations elitist buddies. Now with Carney calling for the same privatization the same nay sayers are miraculously seeing the wisdom of it.

Too much tribalism blinding Canadians.

No, but if we are going to privatize how do you protect the interests of consumers? We already have sky high airfare. Its cheaper to go to Europe or vagas then it is toronto. So how do you encourage competitive markets?

For the record.

I wasn't necessary against some sort of privatizing the airports when I 'think' Mulroney put it forward 40yrs ago and I feel the same way now that Carney is tossing it about.

I don't know enough about it to really have much of an opinion. I do agree with what PPCLIGuy is saying about not wanting to pay for other peoples travel.

I'm mostly pointing out the irony how fast peoples firm beliefs flip flop when "their guy" champions it.
