BBC is covering this and indicates that Ireland, Germany, South Korea and England are all headed to China soon and this deal may be the example used by them and others in shifting things.

The Dodge Charger, built in Windsor, just won the North American Car of the Year Award at the Detroit Auto Show. Quite a coup for Chrysler and for Canada. The two remaining US car companies do not want to leave Canada. In the past when I was involved in a small way in Chrysler, their plant in Windsor consistly ranked in the top 2 or 3 in terms for quality for all their plants across the world. I’m not sure if that hold true today, but I think that it does. Our vehicles built here have an overall higher quality then those built in the US, scrapping the plants here and moving them to the US means that their quality overall will fall and as a result so will there sales.

Mexico seems to be doing fine, I haven't heard a single peep from him about the growing Chinese EV market there. I believe their tariff on them is only 50%.

The US auto industry alone produces over 10M units annually... this is not even a drop in the ocean

Google, Facebook, Apple and others know your daily routine, what your interests are, etc and sell that on the open market for advertisers, on top of a lot of people already posting their lives all over public social media.

I'd be far more worried about what's on a cell phone that always have on you than some cars, and frankly probably would get a lot less data than what those companies already are selling about you

I share the info/cybersecurity concern. I’m not particularly concerned we’ll acquire them for government fleets, but I hope either way that CSE is all over this.

Cars are computers with cameras and SIM cards and wifi and Bluetooth modems and antennas. Incidentally they also have wheels and can go places. We already know China’s domestic national security laws obligate companies to cooperate fully with the state on national security matters, and that this poses info security concerns.

We already have at least one case of a Chinese security camera company ordered to shut down in Canada and leave the country over our own national security concerns after an Investment Canada Act review.

Turns out, when it comes to being hostile to a nearby smaller island nation, there is little difference between the two.

But I've always maintained, we cannot fight the Chinese and the Americans at the same time. If the Americans wanted to work with us, sure, we could fight the Chinese. But if the Americans are putting the screws to us, and the Chinese are willing to make a deal, well, Chinese it is.
