Liberal (Minority/Majority) Government 2025 - ???

If there is more, this could get ugly for the CPC.

‘Get it over with,’ former Conservative MP tells potential floor-crossers

Does make you wonder how many more may be thinking about it.

Going to be bad regardless of how it happens if it happens, current slow burn continuing or a group all at once.

No idea. Sometimes people don't notice provisions in constitutions or legislation until something brings it to their attention. Until Moroun starting squawking, the matter didn't have a high profile. None of that detracts from how interesting the provision is.
Moroun started squawking about this over a dozen years ago, he launched lawsuit after lawsuit after lawsuit (some accounts say that its been 27-29) over the new bridge over the last 15yrs. Go and do the research. He has only found a sympathetic ear now.

Moroun lawsuits taint their desire to 'talk'

The above article is from 10yrs ago - 1 of his cases went all the way to the Supreme Court of Canada about the bridge, he lost...

Maybe Canada should expropriate (or threaten to) the Canadian side of his bridge. A international bridge of such strategic importance should not be private property in my opinion. The fact he actively interferes with our sovereignty and national interests indicate to me his private interests should be trumped.

Once the new bridge is opened it will be a case of bare knuckles capitalism, which bridge will be able to post the lowest toll and still be able to turn a profit. The Ambassador Bridge was built in 1929 and its old and tired. The new bridge will capture 70+% of the lucrative truck traffic because it has direct 401 access the moment you clear CDN Customs, poof, you've zipping along at 105km as a trucker. The Ambassador Bridge route as a trucker on the CDN side has you driving along Windsor streets for about 4-5km before you get on the 401. You need to navigate through about a dozen lights before the 401.

It will look ugly to those outside- but the PP wing has control of the party and he'll just continue to lever defections as betrayals to the cause and his core support will just lap it up. It actually helps build the us vs the world narrative and will reinforce the conviction of the believers.

Rather than more floor crossing, I'd like to see an organized PC Caucus within the broader CPC caucus. If Jivani is allowed to overtly self declare his MAGA love with nothing more than a "he doesn't speak for the party" non-rebuke, the members that don't like Poilievre's direction should build off that precedent, represent their own brand of conservatism under the CPC tent, and dare Pierre to throw them out.

It almost seems like it's in PPs personal interest to just stick as official opposition, and almost like he's accepted that and starting to lean into that and give up on election, given that Carney is a better PC Prime Minister then he is.

The more uncharitable read could also be that he refuses to change enough to make it look like he's caving. Having trusted voices sounding less confrontational (especially in the case of Jenni Byrne sounding way less doctrinaire than usual on CBC) right after the leadership are steps in the right direction. Will it be enough? Time will tell ....

Almost as if the CPC would rather be a conservative opposition movement that happens to have seats in the House of Commons rather than a party that strives to form government…

He's built his entire 'brand' as being inherently oppositional, so really nowhere to pivot. If he does, he'll get ripped apart by the 'PwN the LIbz' crowd for being woke, and the infighting would make them look like clowns and drive away any fence voters.

Plus I don't think he's actually capable of it anyway, it's basically his persona to be the feisty little guy that knows better than the establishment with common sense, despite being completely the establishment and never having worked a real job or having any real common sense.

Not sure I agree. I think that he desperately wants to be Prime Minister. But I honestly believe he has rightly assessed that his only viable path to doing so is to "hang in there" and try and keep his coalition from falling apart until the burden of governance leaves the other guy unpopular enough for PP to win by default- and he's going to do everything in his power to help the bolded along regardless of honesty, principles, or actually beneficially influencing policy.

The risk reward on a pivot doesn't line up. It's way too hard a needle to thread to win people over, and is just about the only thing that could cost him his bomb proof cult of support.

Why make a big bold swing when you can keep your ears pinned back undermining the other guy while collecting 300k, an expense account, and Stornoway?

Once he’s out of politics he will be seriously challenged to pull in half of that if he’s lucky in the real world - especially if he never becomes PM.

His pension will pull in more than half that. I'm sure he'll be just fine.

He’s a long long way away from being 65.

Those kinds of guys always land lucrative jobs. It's no small thing what he's accomplished so far. He can make bank until 65 or sooner, then he will retire very, very well off.

As leader of the Opposition, and a long time MP, has has enough connections to useful people to be hired pretty fast.

The animosity between parties on the hill is mostly manufactured image. When off the clock most are pretty friendly to each other, so I suspect he has lots of friends and acquaintances in the LPC, NDP, CPC, and the "movers and shakers" of Ottawa in general.

I’m sure if he doesn’t land anything real, the party will keep him employed. He’ll be an MP as long as he can. Leader or no. He’s done nothing else in his life.
