Saw some memes on this that basically go:

51st US state? - thumbs down!
28th EU state? - thumbs up!

I know it's not totally accurate but they're funny and have some merit.

On point for what I'm seeing.

Shopping in the states because food is too expensive makes you a traitor.
Working in the states means you should have your citizenship revoked.
Working in EU is a wonderful opportunity for Canadians.

Yes , yes and then in the words of the loyal opposition Marc Carney is the antichrist ..and Donnie is touched by God .
Or the other the way around. .....

lol, one country is currently whipping us with a stick and the other entity is coaxing us with honey. you choose which country is doing which.

i've never had any issue with the free - legal - movement of talent, i've done it myself in the past. i've got no issue at all with cdn's moving to the us, with americans moving to canada or with canadians moving to the eu or eu citizens moving to canada - all legally of course. its much the same with free trade. i was for it when mulroney put it forward in '88, i'm for it with all other countries we have it with today. obviously trump is no longer for the same thing today.
again its all about having more options, the more the better.

I've advocated for closer ties to the US. Geography, economic and military power house, social and cultural similarities...

That has been met with criticism here by the very people who are now gleeful about closer ties to the EU.

What advantages does closer ties to the EU have over closer ties to the USA?

The room temperature individual who tries to start a USA chant was Siegbert Droese, of the AfD.

Well, to be fair, our track record of who's an 'ally' goes back alot further with the Euros (some oblivious longer than others) than it does with the US.
Canadians were fighting and dying alongside Belgians and French long before we were with Americans. Same with the Danes, Norwegians, Poles and Dutch.

We have plenty of ties to the US already, and those existing ones are being used to hurt us. Why would we want more?

Diversification is the name of the game now.

We had all of the that right up until Nov of 2024. We had the 'best trade agreement ever signed in the history of the world'.

We would still have ALL of this if a certain President didn't decide to ignore it all and decide to blow it all up. Correct?

Diversification and balancing risk.

In all of the categories you name, our relationships are already heavily weighted to the U.S. in some categories like social and cultural, that’s not a great risk. In realms like economic development, trade, supply chains, military equipment and partnerships, at a certain point concentration and overweighting becomes vulnerability, which is exactly what we’ve seen with Trump using our economic and trait ties as a weapon, threatening us with economic harm to try to get his way.

Expanding trade and military ties with other partners, including but not limited to Europe, is a classic investment hedge. By restoring more geographic balance to our various exposures, it reduces the ability of one actor to hurt us either deliberately or through dependency dynamics that stumble when they encounter their own problems.

Getting still closer to the U.S. makes us more dependent and vulnerable. Spreading out and diversifying elsewhere makes us less dependent on and vulnerable to that one hegemony.
