Liberal (Minority/Majority) Government 2025 - ???

I called that 18 months ago when Carney was gushing over the EU and calling himself European. We'll need to do our part to alievate Europe's humanitarian crisis.
Nothing ive seen says we will magically have euro zone style free movement law allowing thousands of migrants from Africa to use the EU to get to canada. It just aint happening

Why wouldn't an associate member of the EU be expected to help the collective with their humanitarian crisis?
Well because no one can define what an ‘associate member’ is yet to start with.

I fully get the ‘black swan’ 🦢 planning but there would be zero chance that the Canadian public would sign up for something like that.

Absolutely. When Germany and Japan came asking for LNG, I was all for that as an example, however the LPC didn't believe there was a business case then.

I'm interested in the fine print regarding any kind of association with the EU. Full member countries lose some controls... what will that entail for "associates"?

I note CETA already exists and remains provisional after 9 years... so the EU hasn't fully supported that free trade agreement yet.... what new concessions will Canada need to make to be an associate member? Will that include being a party to the EU's Migration Pact? I mention that one as I think it will be a particular wrinkle with our closest neighbor and our shared porous border.
wizard of oz GIF

Or it could be something else.....

As well, a number of member states have not signed on to that, Poland is a major case in point to this.
Poland joined the EU in 2004, the Migration Pact was introduced in 2024.

From google:

"Poland was granted "temporary exemption" from the mandatory relocation or financial "solidarity" contributions because Poland was hosting hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians already. Brussels continues to monitor through periodic reviews".

This all sounds delightfully soveirgn.

Time will tell.

In the meantime try and enjoy life

Good question. Any one of these EU states can veto Canadian participation. It’s likely that most of them are going to try and request credit, cash and especially foist their immigration and roving millions of migrants woes upon us, and Mr. C better be prepared to say “no”, “non”, “nein”, nei, nem, nil and no way in hell.

No. But Carney wants this, and I'm betting EU members want to offload some of their guests.

The government has a majority. At most the public can threaten to vote for Poilievre in 3 years or hope Carney is attending Question period so MPs can ask him about it.

Carney has his majority. We're getting what he wants now. Question period is just a performance.

But most Canadians want what he's offering. Oh well. Make good investments, hard times are coming.

…or maybe Carney pulls a ‘Blue Swan’ event, calls an election, racks up an epic majority Doug Ford style, and gets another 4-5 years or solid majority rule. PP hangs on for the battle in 2031. 🤔

Well I know that Carney didn’t have anything to do with my hard times at the pump today. Diesel in Ottawa today was 274.9 today, twice what it was since February when Trump kicked off OP FIX-UP FAILURE OF MIDNIGHT HAMMER LAST YEAR…

The EU negotiates trade deals as a bloc, members can't sign their own.
Each current member country of the EU became a member through a national referendum. Mark Carney will try to go around that because we are in a Confederation and Provinces have a say in any possible change to the Constitution Act if becoming an associate EU member in any way impinges on Provincial authority.
If he’s thinking he can bully most provinces he probably right, but there’s a formula and a process for change and you can bet that might take years.

If PP actually managed to hang on after the ass whooping he'd get from an election now then the right in Canada is officially dead.

👍

Disagree, my company would benefit heavily from work visas being not needed to finally expand our European operations
Nothing is stopping your company right now from easily obtaining work visas in Europe by following a long standing and very workable practice. I did this for our company all the time and it was never a problem. But that’s not the main issue, nor is even conventional European immigration if done properly and transparently.
It’s the unwanted and unusable migrant hordes of many millions who have crossed into Europe suddenly flowing to Canada that will be the main problem, and you can bet no serious and intellectually cognizant American President wants that on his border, let alone the guy that’s in the office right now.

since when does the Canadian public get to sign on to anything? We are told a suitable lie instead until it is too late. That is why and how we are in this immigration mess in the first place. I side with Jarnhamsr on this one
