I know the RCD did have a jump troop, did being the operative word, and I was just wondering whether there is any chance whatsoever of a Crewman getting his Para wings?
Cheers,

ITs not unheard of...It would probably take a lot of hoop-jumpiong. There were guys in the Strats that went on the jump course from time to time.

Wait and see I guess...

I know a RCD UTPNCM guy at RMC and he has his wings, so I think it is possible. Either that or it used to be possible.

Or the guy could have had cadet experience before...

The wings that guys get whilst on the Cadet Jump Course are the same as the ones that anyone else in the CF wears after their Basic Para. Same course, same wings.

Might not seem "right", but there it is. I know a few guys who have their wings due to cadet jump courses. Most of them did time in the Jump Troop (1st Tp Para) in 8CH and/or RCD, and ended up with the white wings.

As for getting your Basic Para course while a crewman, seems to be pretty rare nowadays, as there is little requirement (if any) for a crewman to have his wings (other than the kewl, look at the pretty wings on my uniform factor). That said, I still ask to go on it......

We know Al.  You just want the Kool Wings and fancy boots...  ;D

(I do believe our guy in RMC was in Jump Troop.)

Had the fancy jacket (back in SSF days......) and a lot of buddies in 1st Tp. Shoulda done more PT, and less drinking......

Now I want the course as a PT training goal (and maybe a way to scare the fear of heights out of me......). I hear there's a "Geritol" course for pers over 35 (OC's, SSM's, etc) to give them the perspective of Airborne ops, without having to have the body of a 19 year old. I'd still want the full-meal deal, just so it wouldn't be referred to as "oh, one of those" courses.

There is no denying that they do look cool! ;)
Still, on the subject of parachuting, does anyone know of any civi places near pet?

Basic jump wings is the only thing transferable from Army Cadets.  I wish I had time to try the course as a teenager.  Are engineers able to get onto the Jump Course?

In the UK, getting arms other than Infantry into Basic Para Courses is considered a good thing.  It teaches confidence and aggressiveness.  These are good things in a Soldier.

I know for a fact that in the past, there have been some crewman in my unit that have been on the jump courses. It's been few and far between though. I believe the last person in my unit that got the course is currently a Sgt and had been trying for the course for at least the last ten years. If this gives you an indication of how reluctant people are to give the course to armoured soldiers, I don't know what else is.

O.K...Time to put this in proper perspective...

The infantry is not the only trade to receive the jump course...I spent 7 years in the reg Armour Corps and have, in my time, seen plenty of guys with the wings(and not just red ones either)

Being in the Armoured Corps, or any other job, is not going to make it easy to get a course these days, but neither is it unheard of...And there are plenty of guys who get the course outside of being in jump units. (I know RCD Jump Troop is no more)

For those of you who are not in the know about such things (no names!), please try not to wade in on the young ones who are trying to get information. Its not their fault that they don't know and its not your job to try and shut them down.

Thanks :cdn: :salute:

Morgs,

I can't give you "odds", but we do get soldiers on the jump course from time to time.  I don't know of any over the past two years, but then again we've been busy.  We seemed to get two or three guys a year when I was Troop Leader.  The priority goes to the units with actual jump positions (which makes sense) but other arms/units can get people on.  The bottom line is that it is possible if not necessarily probable.

Cheers,

As the SME here for the jumper side. Anyone can get a jump course. You just have to be loaded through the Regt. There is NO Gerital course. There is NO cadet course. There were 2/3 cadets on the basic para course, when I was out on my JM course. It has always the Corp that didnot like us crewman jumping. If it didn't have a big gun on. Well, it was no use. Now look.

Ah. The good ol' days of RCD Airborne Armoured Recce. They were 1 troop, D sqn wern't they? May they rest in peace. Or pieces as the case may be.

Are their many (if any) of those hard asses around anymore?

Thanks for all the answers guy, I really appreciate it! :salute:
I guess this means there is a chance, which is a lot better than no chance, even if it is minimal.
Seems like perseverance is the key here.

I know a Mcpl in the armoured reserve that got his para wings. Others from the regiment were also offered.
