Good day everyone,

I have a question. Is it possible to take LWOP for longer then 1 year?
Or is it even possible to take LWOP for that period.
I would appreciate any help or comments on that issue!

I've quoted the applicable paras below:

LWOP -IN EXCESS OF 30 DAYS



85. Applications. Applications for LWOP for a period in excess of 30 days shall be forwarded to NDHQ/DGPCO or NDHQ/DGPCOR, as applicable, and shall contain recommendations by the CO and OCC.

86. Points of Consideration. Before recommending or approving any period of LWOP, the following points should be considered:
a. the reason for the LWOP;
b. whether the CF can forego the services of the member for the period of LWOP;
c. whether there are better alternatives to achieve the aim;
d. the rank, performance and conduct of the member;
e. whether there will be significant periods during the term of LWOP when the member, upon request, could be returned to duty;
f. whether the period of LWOP should be counted for promotion purposes with reference to 11-6 and CFAO 19-4; and
g. whether the member is undergoing a period of obligatory service.

The "Annex E" referred to in the order is below:

(2) provide subsidized academic or technical training if I am successful during the period being applied for; or

Note -An application for LWOP for academic or technical training must be initiated early enough to permit it to reach NDHQ 30 days prior to the commencement of such training. This will permit proper consideration of the application and subsequent notification to the applicant in sufficient time to complete arrangements to participate in the course should the application be approved.

Short answer - yes LWOP for longer than one year is possible - but I strongly recommend you read CFAO 16-1 Section 6 IN DETAIL.

Couple of caveats: 

1.  I am retired and no longer in the loop - it's entirely possible that CFAO 16-1 has been amended or expanded in some manner via CANFORGEN or other order (I couldn't find a DAOD on the subject).

I just checked your profile - which I should have done in the first place.  It appears you are in the Reserves.  The programme you are looking for is "Exempt Drill and Training" - NOT LWOP.

EXEMPT DRILL AND TRAINING

23. All members of the Primary Reserve may be granted exemption from Cl A Res Svc as follows:

  1. up to 180 days in any 365 day period, by the CO; and
  2. in excess of 180 days, as directed by the Commander of a Command.

24. When an exemption is granted to a member of the Primary Reserve, the appropriate entry will be made to the Reserve Data System. However, since members of the NDHQ/PRL and their attached members from the Supp Res are not administered through the RDS these entries are instead to be submitted in accordance with A-PM-245-001/FP-Z01.

25. Periods of Exempt Drill and Training granted in lieu of Maternity Leave will be recorded as such in the member's personal file, and these periods shall have no effect on “qualifying service” for purposes of promotion or incentive pay increases.

Caveats mentioned above still apply!!
