I have searched around a bit but, couldn't find what I was looking for.

I am have finished the PCP portion of my fire/medic training which finishes at the end of June. I am looking for a unique and challenging experience. I am interested in the joining the reserves as a Med Tech. I will stop in at a recruitment office when I have completed the course but, I figured a little info from people that are already in the trade wouldn't hurt.

Here are some of the question I have so far;

Joining the reserves requires a minimum 2 year requirement? What if I want to leave before said date?
What additional training is supplied by the army?
I would like to be deployed; would I be working in a hospital or would I expect to be on foot?
How does it work if I wanted to join UN or NATO?
If you are deployed, what are there options for length of deployment?
I do not expect much for pay but, am curious to what you would get in the reserves and deployment.
Do you guys enjoy the way it is ran and what you do?
What types of benefits do you get?

Thank you,

Garett

There is no length of service/contract obligations in the Reserves. How ever there are obligations in the Reserves such as showing up parade nights and exercises throughout the year. You don't have to show up for everything, but you also can't show up for 1 night every 2 months either.

Basic training, trades training, and career courses to advance in your trade as well as leadership training, etc. There are a variety of courses available in the military, you may get a opportunity to do some of them.

You could be doing a variety of things on tour, I'm not sure who it works regarding who gets what role/position but with HLTA(leave) I've heard Med Techs can rotate roles as required.

Do you mean go on a UN or NATO tour? If there is an opportunity for members of your brigade to deploy, it will come down through your unit about how to volunteer for a tour.

Generally a roto will be 6-9 months, the length will depend on which organization you deploy with, etc.

You get no say/options in the duration of your tour.

The pay scale is available online. Also, the pay you get on tour will depend on your rank, and what the hazard/danger and hardship allowances end up being.

If you are a student, you can get up to $2000 for post secondary education for up to 4(?) years, as well there are some dental benefits. If you are on a Class C contract, I believe you will get Regular Force benefits(which are very good) for the duration of that contract. I'm sure when you are on Class B you will be entitled to other benefits as well. The recruiter at the unit you wish to join should be able to get you more information regarding the benefits a Class A reservist is can get.

Thank you LightFighter for the quick reply and good information.

Primary Care Paramedic (PCP) is really the gateway qualification for Med Techs. Without it, you won't likely be serving "outside the wire", whereas with it, you may. You don't decide to join a UN or NATO mission, the Goverment of Canada does and then deploys the CAF in support of that mission. Typical tour length is 6 months, sometimes longer, sometimes shorter (Op SIRONA in Sierra Leone is 2 months for clinicians). Good luck in your career, whatever you decide.
