Are there any soldiers in the Vancouver area who would be open to meeting (or having a beer) with a prospective recruit? I know this is more of a recruiter's job... I fully trust them to be honest and open about the military experience, but no matter what I say, my mum doesn't.  She's got loads of concerns about me joining... so in my effort to appease her, I believe meeting a soldier would help.
I believe in the Afghan mission and want to help by joining the CF. (and be part of something bigger than my current occupation...) That's probably what scares her the most.

I know this isn't any of you guys' jobs... I have lots of respect for what you do, and hope to join your ranks someday soon.  I'd appreciate someone taking the time to meet up with me and talk about what it's like on base, and outside the wire.  Thanks for taking the time to read this post!

It's too bad you weren't in Edmonton, because I would take you up on part of your offer. I always love talking to people and talking about the job. I may not have been overseas (yet), but every trade in the CF is important, and either directly or indirectly affects the job going on in the sandbox. You always know there are folks on this site willing to chat about it.

Best of luck,

Dan

You should check out the recruiting centre downtown first if possible, or drop into see a recruiter at any one of the armouries in town. I know that the Seaforth recruiter has alot of 'outside the wire' time and is a good egg as well. There are alot of similar folk in the other units as well.

If you try to hookup with some of the villains on this site, they'll likely take you for a half dozen beer then try to hit on your mom  :o

Nice! I'm sure the guys on this site aren't that villainous... probably the beer, but I doubt they'd go for my mom!  I live right by the Seaforth Armoury, maybe I'll drop by tomorrow and see who I can find. Thanks for the reply!

Never doubt the ability of a man to go after another mans mom! ;) Just kidding, most of us wouldn't do that, or would we???

I highly recommend you check out the Canada Day celebrations in Vancouver. You'll have a chance to interact with many veterans - Of the current war and previous ones. There's tons of info to be gained as well. Good luck.

I should be in Vancouver next Satuday (11th). I am very busy so i dont have much time.

Well said lad...hear-hear.  Not too many members think that way.  I've been on tour thrice, one for the Gulf War, one UN tour, and CM.  I don't really count Alert.  I'm an MSEOp and could kill when I hear, "oh, you're just a driver!"  from my 0 trade comrades.  Little do some realize that planes need fuel in them and MSEOps to deliver it...and ALL the AF techs who miraculously keep them birds flying!!
