All those who adhere to Islam can subscribe to receive the call to prayers 5 times a day as an SMS audio clip on their phones, just like we do with Amber Alerts

Listen, i dont care for church bells but you wont find me bitching about them.If you support 9 minutes a day why not just go with 5 times a day for the standard 2-4 minutes per call?
If you're going to do something do it right as they say.
And that's okay. Some of us don't want religious broadcasts blasted over public loud speakers whether it's 9 minutes or 90. Considering what Islam does and represents in alot or places I'd chalk it up to a little more than pearl clutching.Listen, i dont care for church bells but you wont find me bitching about them.

Some do. The Catholic church near our last place marked 0800, 1200 and 1600. Only noon is a scheduled mass.Church bells do not mark the time by the hour. Town clock towers do that.
Doesn't Halifax still have a noon gun?I am good with neither. Neither buildings should make noise.
Allowing the call to prayer in Canadian cities hasn't been totally without backlash

... and this ...I am good with neither. Neither buildings should make noise.
... one has to ask if we'd also be OK if all churches and religions were told, "hey, zero public audio for you - there's an app." I'd be OK with that broad a rule, but I suspect some might at least quibble when it comes to their own institutions being told to STFU, liturgically speaking.Let's go full 21st century with this. All those who adhere to Islam can subscribe to receive the call to prayers 5 times a day as an SMS audio clip on their phones, just like we do with Amber Alerts. The RoC can just not receive them.
If that's the standard, survivors of Christian church sexual abuse enter the chat.... Considering what Islam does and represents in alot or places I'd chalk it up to a little more than pearl clutching.
But we've been doing something about that. Christianity has modernized. The fact that a common retort to a complaint about an Islamic-flavoured abuse is "Oh yeah? What about the Inquisition/Crusades?" highlights in blinding relief the fact that centuries' worth of moderation have been achieved. The Christian churches in Canada overwhelmingly lack any doctrine that might excuse abuses of non-believers, irrespective of what might be extant in scripture and related documents. And what's in Canada is wholly under our control. If that's the standard, survivors of Christian church sexual abuse enter the chat.
Yes replying to the original post about "Christian church sexual abuse" with the retort of "we've modernized since the crusades" is a fine debate strategy. But we've been doing something about that. I look at Canada and the Islamic world from 30,000 feet and conclude, "We neither need nor want any of that". Christian church bells are not a problem that needs to be solved so that we can legitimately draw bright lines that block people pushing illiberal beliefs and agendas via "rock soup" methods fronted by useful idiots.
unsurprising to see that some here are opposed to freedom of religionShocking to see how many on here are totally cool with bringing that into Canada.
Freedom of religion is one thing as long as they don’t attempt to forcefully make people convert.unsurprising to see that some here are opposed to freedom of religion
"Christian church sexual abuse" was (might still be) a problem. The fact that it existed/exists and we might not have completely compensated for or eradicated it is not an excuse for tolerating other illiberalities trying to squeeze themselves into the country. Fix what is ours; deny others the opportunity to add to our problems.Yes replying to the original post about "Christian church sexual abuse" with the retort of "we've modernized since the crusades" is a fine debate strategy.
is there any evidence of this mosque forcing people to convert?Freedom of religion is one thing as long as they don’t attempt to forcefully make people convert.
There’s a fine line between freedom of religion and imposing it on the unwilling
It's not freedom of religion if they are trying to impose it on others. I claim that's the agenda behind much of this kind of creep. I observe it in other countries; I'd rather just block it and move on with solving some of the problems we already have. There is enough of our own long-standing shit to clean up without arguing ourselves into believing that our liberal principles compel us to risk accepting more.unsurprising to see that some here are opposed to freedom of religion
let's silence all church bells across the country then. Let's go full Quebec and outlaw any public displays of any religion. Tear down the churchs/mosques/synagogues , forcing me to see them is them imposing their religion on me.It's not freedom of religion if they are trying to impose it on others.

If that's what you need, you can try. I have no problem with overt displays of Christianity or Judaism. Their foundations are moderate; their displays are unostentatious; their immoderate fringe fundamentalists are very quiet and quite obviously just want to be left alone. Their mainstream beliefs are almost indistinguishable now from core principles of secular liberalism. They are not trying to import Rome or Jerusalem or any part of Europe or anywhere else to Canada and have not been doing so for decades. I have no interest in importing the cultural and religious/political quiffs of Saudi Arabia or Iran, and will continue to advocate for minimizing their influence here without burning down our own heritage because of some made-up idea that being liberal 99% of the time isn't good enough.let's silence all church bells across the country then.
