How many small boat shops are there in Canada that work in aluminum, plastics, carbonfibre and resins?
How many are interested in putting any of their own money or time into something that may never go past the single prototype stage? I'm sure there are a few, but my understanding is that those types of businesses are quite busy just keeping-up with demand.

From what I can see of the USV market those are the dominant materials for making craft that will stay afloat in rough weather for a long time. Electronics don't get seasick.
True, but electronics and mechanical devices are vulnerable to moisture and shock. Small boats in big seas get real wet, and bounce around pretty hard the whole time.

Right on the money. Shake electronics a lot and see how they react.

There is also the fact that most of those USV's are on the smallish side of size, which means their detection horizon is also reduced, especially in rough seas.

Out here a lot of those small builders got their start on aluminum boat building by working on the fast cats.

Where, and at what times of the year?

6 months in the tropics is vastly differnt form the mid-lattitudes, and even more different from northern lattitudes. Was it "sheltered waters", or open ocean?

Glossy brochures are great, but in the end that present the best case scenario from the manufacturer... We have all seen how that works in the real world often enough to be more than passingly skeptical.

A small fiberglass boat like a Provincial '45 can operate 300 days of the year in the Northumberland Strait, and maybe 200 in the Gulf of St. Lawrence (depending on wind direction). It's salt water, so that's "ocean" for many manufacturers.
 
And every week, every month, every year, people are pushing the limits farther and getting more out of these automatons.

If they don't achieve 100% their 70%, or even 40%, is that much more than was possible before.

And right now, all over the world, people are pushing envelopes and demanding things that were not on the table in January 2022.

Every armed force in the world is trying this on.

The trend - the USN is letting the commercial sector take the risks it is comfortable taking and buying the service from the market place.

The USN doesn't have to take on all the risks associated with a programme of record and definitive solutions. It can purchase what is available and figure out how to make best use of it.

It doesn't need to fit every last bolt and grommet. It can rent a hull and drop a container on board, Or it can buy the comms link. Or it can buy the data generated commercially. Just like buying Google Earth imagery and Starlinks comms.

Edit: For industry the risk of supplying uncrewed vessels to a war zone is entirely manageable as a financial risk. It involves no personal hazard, no salaries or pensions or injury. The vessel can be written off / purchased on destruction. The financial cost of the vessel is relatively small (5-15 MUSD). The provider makes money as long as the vessel provides the service. If the vessel is destroyed in the commission through the actions of the client then the client buys the destroyed vessel - Pottery Barn rules (you break it you bought it).
 

The game plan seems to revolve around some platforms being capable of enduring 30 day patrols unattended, some enduring 3 to 12 months unattended, and refits occuring about once a year. Replacement rather than repair in order to keep the costs down.
 
Then CDCs come into the picture, ideally 3 batches of 5-6 each.
and when do those get slotted in? The Yard appears fully booked for at least 15 years and that is if they start building new facilities now and that probably won't happen. And we could kinda use them now and not when everything else is delivered

As the CDC are combatants under the NSS, doesn't that fall to Irving to build them or at least first right of refusal?

so no CDC in my lifetime or that of my grandson. Unless Irving re-opened St. John's which would take at least 5 years (yes I am optimistic) and then hired and trained an entire new workforce they simply can't do it. And as said before we need them last year, not in a decade or more
